G'day

I have an old 90 forerunner that I have owned and maintained for the last 8 years, it has an aftermarket safari turbo fitted to the 2.8 diesel slug.

One of the boys from a recent fishing trip mentioned to me (Whilst I was having multiple attempts at getting off the Warren Beach near Pemberton) that by fitting a 2.5 inch exhaust system to the turbo would increase it's performance.

He mentioned it would allow the turbo to spool up quicker and to maintain the boost longer thus helping me on the sand dunes.

Anyone out there able to help with this one.

I have the money for the exhaust but was hoping to use this for a front locker

Cheers

I asume you are in WA? If so give these guys a call Custom Exhaust Specialists 9446 9613. I have used them several times. They are happy to supply what you need not what they want to sell.
Ask them the question and they can give you a good idea of what you could expect.

I am not affiliated to the company.

As a general rule ....
Diesels love to breathe...so opening up both exhaust and intake can..and will...make a diesel go and pull better than standard. The reason for this is that those who think they know best (ie..government beauracracy) legislate that vehicles must meet certain criteria for ADRs...whether it is good for the vehicle or not. Hence most diesels sold here are ...well...ckoked and strangled.
So fitting a big bore exhaust is a good idea basically. On engines with turbos ...an exhaust with minimal muffling works because turbos are in themselves noise restrictors to a large extent. For the intakes ...a good snorkel is the go along with removal of any noise restricting plumbing that makes the intake air travel along a convoluted route before actually getting to the air cleaner and filter proper.

HTH.

G'day 4runner,

I think if I was in your situation I would be considering what it is I wanted to achieve. It seems to me you are happy to spend money on either the larger exhaust system or the locker for the front diff, so I would carefully think and check with others where I could achieve the best bang for the dollars spent.

As a thought, say once you are in low range, travelling slowly, then the locker could well be the better choice, however if the majority of your off road work is likely to be high range then the exhaust might be more beneficial.

Either option will most likely be a benefit to you, however which one will be best needs to consider what it is you want to achieve, (and the exhaust could well provide a benefit both on and off road.)

Just some thoughts, neither right or wrong, hope they help.

Rob.
