Hi All,
My first post so please be gentle. We are considering a pop top camper trailer as our first van. We are just looking at weekends and short trips. Can anyone let me know what the movement of the van is like with an adult sleeping at either end. The Boss is a light sleeper and when we have used RVs in the past we have always, always had to use stabilisation jacks. I know most pop ups come with them but does some movement transfer through anyway?
Cheers and thanks
Dave

Thanks for that, I guess we'd probably look to use it like that when moving on the next day.

What I'm looking for though is how stable is the van, particularly the sleeping platforms once the stabilisers are down. Eg. If I toss and turn all night will it be felt at the fold out section at the other end of the van?

Cheers

Hi. David. we have had a Jayco Eagle for about 10 years now , and we both use the front bed ( me 90kg &wWife 60 odd.) and have never had a worry with any instability, I remove the rear mattress and use the bed area for storage. leaves all the room free of gear,

Some times when we are travelling I use one stacker jack under the side at the rear , also usually need it to level the van, and the jocky wheel , just as good as the legs for stability.
I can't leave it hitched as the bed would touch the spare on the Pajero.

Cheers Des.

Hi David, got Jayco Dove outback, travelled central oz staying 1 or 2 night stops, did not put legs down....time saver for quick get away..but check wheel base centre!, if unhooked from car, u could tip van up....check setup & see these things at home....cud make for hilarious view at next caravan park. You do get more van jiggle with rough sleepers, but its a comprimise. See ya

Funny you should say that, I remember a story of a couple that didn't put the bed up properly and a group around a camp fire saw more than they should have when the bed collapsed and they fell out on the ground.

Hi David,

I presume you're talking about a Jayco/Goldstream type of camper?

If so, they're not really intended to be used without stabilisers - I know I had an interesting minute or so when I had our (entirely unloaded and detached from the vehicle) Eagle Outback off the stabilisers and needed to do something inside the van at the back. As I moved rearward, the front end lifted off the ground - not far, but I rather quickly modified my intentions!

OK, so I'm around 100kg and you might not be, but I don't think it's worth the bother to try to live without stabilising the thing, after all that's how they were designed to work.

Another issue might be the front bed - our Eagle has a "Queen" sized bed at the front which, when extended, really doesn't clear our vehicle if left attached, so we don't really have a choice anyway. I just unhook, wind down the stabilisers, pull out the beds, brace them and get on with it - you can waste more time trying to find a solution to the problem than enjoying yourself at your camping spot.

Regards,

Charlie

Thanks Charlie, I'm not really proposing to use the camper unstabilised or attached to the vehicle. I guess my OP was confusing.

What I am after is:

If the Camper IS detached from the tow vehicle AND the stabilisers Are down. does the van move when you have a heavy (weighty) sleeper tossing and turning at one end and a lighter sleeper at the other.

Thanks for the quick responses.

Cheers

Used one years ago for a bit and never found a problem. If I read correctly you are asking how much a person moving around on the bed at one end affect the person on the bed at the other end. As I said, I never found it to be a problem and I am a fairly light sleeper. The movement does not transfer through the van.

Interesting, we had a jayco style camper trailer (Viscount) with pull out beds for 6 years and we found that having 2 kids on one end and the 2 adults at the other DID transfer movement. Despite what you would think the 2 girls rolling over and moving was transmitted to the other bed more so than the heavier adults. This was a 1988 model with the dual pole supports under the bed ends so I do not know if this was a factor as other brands use different bed support mechanisms. After this we had a windsor rapid which was much better but if you sleep lightly you would still notice small movements.

Quick answer is they "shimmy a bit" when the other end toss & turn. We have two kids sleep at the other end and you can feel it when they are moving around. Nothing too voilent though.

Yes, you will feel it when the other person is moving on the other bed. Anyone who says otherwise is kidding themselves.
We have been travelling for the last 10 weeks straight in a 2010 Jayco Hawk Outback with the 2 boys at one end and us at the other end. It won't matter what brand of camper you get, you will still feel the movement, as they all use the same design concept, although it is not like the whole things shakes violently, just a little bit of a shudder.
The Jayco has been brilliant, and we are glad we did not spend an extra 10k on a goldstream. Jayco campers also have amazing resale value, which you may find when looking for secondhand ones.

Cheers
Mark
