Great ocean road camping

G'day all,

Thinking of spending a week in the Great Ocean Road district at the end of January. We have a camper trailer and three kids (9-15) who love the water. Want a nice spot where we can camp for the week and do day trips to see the sights (i.e. only want to pack up once). Would welcome any suggestions on where to stay and what to see and do. Minimum requirement is showers and a flushing toilet.

Cheers

Hi Geobserver

End of January could be a problem down this way. Very very popular. I would suggest you try Port Campbell CV Park, this is near 12 apostles etc. Closer to Lorne I would suggest Wye River Council CVP (not Big 4) the council park is only open for Christmas to Easter. Another suggestion would be the Skenes Creek CVP - all the above parks you may get a booking from somebody cancelling etc.

Be aware last January - the Great Ocean Road was closed due to mudslides etc. If we get rain, its every man for himself. The parks closed also, Kennett River, Cumberland, Wye River etc (all flood) due to their "rivers".

But if the weather is great, there is no better part of the world.

Thanks. We're from Canberra and get an extra week at the end of the school hols to both Vic and NSW schools, so hoping most have cleared out just after the weekend of 28-29 January (entre here for the Canberra comments... but our kids break up a week later).

Cheers

If its after the longweeked in January, then you go for it. I would highly recommend Kennett River (Top Tourist) caravan park. Basic facilities, but clean - beach access is fantastic and the caravan park (I don't know? its just my favourite place) and I'm a local - its where we "locals" go for our quick weekend get away after all the tourists have "gone home"!!!.

Schools in Vic are going back on Feb 1st, so there may still be some hangers on. It would pay to ring and check about bookings now.

I would suggest Port Campell CP as well, nice and protected. Greay spot for swimming etc in the river or the ocean, easy walk into town for a meal or coffee. Able to access great day trips from there. Would suggest you book though.
