Just working on our trip itinery for next year and wondering if anyone knows of a good overnight
campsite somewhere near
Paynes Find. Ideally located not too far out of the way but out of sight of the hwy.

Melissa,
Depends on what you mean by "good"
campsite. I have camped just off the road, about 10 - 15kms North of
Paynes Find, on the GN hwy several times.
There are many clear areas just off little sidetracks that are within hearing distance of the hwy, but not visual range.
If you have your camper with you, you will find a spot no problems.
Hope this helps,Cheers, Jim

Hi Jim,
That sounds OK! Been up that way several times but for the life of me, I can't remember if it was mostly fenced and how easy it is to get off the hwy. Good in this sense just means clear of rubbish and not a favourite burnout strip for the local lads. Always prefer to be out of sight of road, but not worried about out of hearing distance altogether. Planning a quick overnight stop with the camper so nothing else really matters.

Hello Melissa, You may receive this twice as the first reply did not seem to go through.
Anyway, about 100km south of Mt Magnet is a station called "Kirkalocka" it is on the righthand side and the shears quarters and kitchen are about 500mtres from the highway. There is a
campsite behind the quarters and they have bathroom/
toilets and it is quite comfortable. The owners are Geoff and Anne and encourage people to stop over. The cost is about $10pn . Nice spot.
Regards
Mark

Melissa, there was/is a little book that gives campsites around W.A. - 2 versions - North and South. I haven't seen it around for a few years and am still using
mine that i bought many years ago. There is also a publication by the Main Roads (or whatever the Govt calls them today) that gives campsites al;ong the highways. Try '
The Granites' North of Mt Magnet. rgds

Can't
camp at
the Granites any longer unfortunately - now a
day use area only. And the books you refer to are in our
shop on ExplorOz - called Priceless Campsites and Rest Areas in WA by Jan Holland. They are regularly updated and latest versions are available including a new title for NT!ExplorOz

Thanks Maverick, I have copies of both these books ('98 edition - maybe time for an upgrade, LOL). Info on stops around
Paynes Find seemed a bit light on, referring to "roadside rest areas" which could mean just about anything.

Melissa,
3 options we use - see our CSR part 1 notes for these too and I think I can dig up the GPS references for both also if you give me a moment to look them up.
First one is
Lake Nallan but its a bit of a further drive but worth it, the other is 106.2km south of
Paynes Find marked
White Wells and leads into some camps
well off the road down a long track with fire pits and secluded little bays. We ended up camping 86km further north in a
camp 20.2km south of
Paynes Find this trip and it was not as good as this one further back as it was a little close to the road but some sort of thing.
I'll dig up all 3 GPS references for you in a moment.ExplorOz

Thanks Michelle,
Have camped at
Lake Nallan in the past (actually Matty's first
bush camp!). Lovely spot but I think will be too far north for us this time. The other two spots you mention sound good so waypoints would be appreciated.

Haven't got GPS ref handy for
Lake Nallan but it is north of Mt Magnet on RHS and although that sounds like a long drive its worth it if you can manage it with excellent campsites at the lakeside with trees,
bins, fireplaces and free.
However, close to
Paynes find the 2
places mentioned above are:
White Wells Bush Camp - 29 34' 01.9 S, 117 9' 11.6 E on RHS side of road
Unmarked
camp 20.2km south of Paynes - 29 17' 10.4 S, 117 28' 51.3 E on left hand side of road.
Hope this helps.

Michelle, I think our posts just crossed! This
camp will follow our first day of travel with the new baby next year so I like the idea of having some options. Thanks for the waypoints.
