Many may remember a previous post on a chassis break and subsequent repair at Durba Springs back in June. The incredible help and support of the fantastic people who were at Durba Springs at the time enabled a temporary repair to be made and successful escape from a terrible situation. I will be forever indebted to these people, particularly 'Dave' who completed the welding.

Link to the previous post here

Now an update to the story. We finished our holiday and made it back home, contacted the manufacturer and insurer about the failure but had no success on either front. This appears to be the common result - after talking to other unfortunate people who have had the same problem we all have had to pay for subsequent repairs ourselves.

After a little research, it appears that chassis cracks and breaks on the new breed of 4WD utilities is a common occurrence across ALL manufacturers, particularly if carrying a load across corrugated roads for any length of time.

There is a happy ending to this story. I arranged for a chassis extension to be conducted on the BT50 by 'Wide Bay Motors' in Cockatoo and they have done a terrific job. I had considered doing this when I first bought the ute - in hindsight I should have.

Now to get back out into the bush!

Cheers, Geoff

Geoff,

Good to see a great outcome from a bit of a disaster.

Are you planning to give the CSR another go?

I will pass onto Dave you thanks for the welding that he had done to get you on your way again.

Hi Wayne,

Thanks for the reply and give my regards to Dave.

Would love to do the CSR again, the country out that way is just fantastic. We had planned visiting Rudall River until the chassis break dictated a quick exit to Newman instead, so there is an excuse! I just need to get a crew together again - some don't wish to travel with me again!

Wow look at the overhang on the original photo. Really it's not surprising although unfortunate.

You'll be right with the extension. Look forward to a trip report when you finally complete the trip.

Fab.

Hi Fab,

Thanks for your comments. Not sure when we'll get to cover the area we missed previously - hopefully sooner rather than later.

Cheers, Geoff

Good to see the BT50 back on the road again, how much was the extension and hows the turning circle now. Should be much better now to carry the camper as I find that my current cab chassis is much better than the extra cab I had previoely with my camper on.

Hi Murray,

Yes, I'm hoping that will be the case. With the camper I was keeping all the weight up over the axles, but that obviously didn't work in the end. Thanks for your comments.

Nice job Geoff. The car is looking far more balanced now. What did the final loaded weight end up being? I see you've added another 80kg of side rails to the mix.
Cheers Craig...........

Hi Craig,

Not sure about the final loaded weight - haven't put the camper on and loaded it up yet but hopefully will soon!

The Tare mass of the BT50 is now 2320kg after the modification.

Cheers,
Geoff

saw a thread on Overlander forum this week with similar chassis breakage happening. this quote would be fairly alarming though if you have the same set up..... "Just got the inside story.

3rd d40 they've pulled off Fraser island in similar condition in recent times.

All had airbags."
