Finely finished installing car computer and touch screen today.. Happy with result. 1.8 Duo Core, 4gig ram, 250gig HD, Win7 and now loaded with over 18000 songs. Yes 18000 thats about 120gig and I don't think we will hear them all on any trip we do. Been at it for over a month after work on days off glad is done. Now to enjoy I hope.

Very very cool,,,,.... and interesting.

Two amps as well. We'll be able to hear you 30 minutes before you arrive.

I find that technology really fascinating but I know full well that it would be up to me to operate it, and drive the vehicle at the same time. My co-pilot is still trying to find the "any" key.

I'm glad I ain't too scared to be lazy

Yer My co-pilot was sick of nursing the laptop and all the cables the go with them GPS, Mouse, the heat of the laptop on her legs and the overall clumsiness of them. But at least she is familiar with the use of the software I have installed so she should be right just has to make sure she has her glasses on.

At our age Alan (yours, mine and The Crow's) there doesn't have to be a reason, it's purely boys and their toys.

I understand completely.

None of the aftermarket GPS or factory sound systems do what I want for our travels off the beaten track hence the reason for this system. I can run up to 4 mapping programs off the one GPS at same time and don't have to switch between programs to go to street directions if I want and No more cd's to worry about plus complete mapping of Australia Desert, outback, and UBD for city n Country towns, plus voice directions as and if required. As Gone Bush said boys and our toys we all have them in one way or another.

The only difference between the men and the boys, is the size and cost of the toys!! :))

He who dies with the most toys wins ya know!!

Looks like a nice set up Crow, enjoy it and have fun.

That is excellent. We have an in-dash unit running windows CE which basically means to us that its either Oziexplorer or street nav. Never both. It would be handy to have a full Windows environment.

What did you do for the DVD/CD drive, USB, keyboard and mouse? We have cables for USB in the glove box.

Also have you got the main box details? I gather that its a 12V mobile one.

More pics would be nice to give us and idea. Now that I have finished my model train layout I have a few spare hours. That's with tongue in cheek because we all know what happens when one retires. Yeah right!

Thats why I decided to build my own I have used the others such VMS and others as you say running win ce but you cannot run full programs either the machine or the software cannot run them. The screen is touch, I have a small wireless keyboard that fits in the glovebox if I need it an a small wireless mouse. Will put photos up of them a little later today. The system has bluetooth so hands freephone. Internet on the go so can get emails. If Wife wants she can email family family of friends on the go as long as we have mobile phone service. The computer connects to internet through our phones.

What is the main cpu box. Is it behind the screen or else where in the car?

Not really interested in the mobile comms stuff like blue tooth and emails and the such when out in the bush. I don't even take my mobile phone with me. Its permanently "parked" in the dresser drawer and there it stays. We have a satellite phone for emergencies. The boys are fine and off with their own families now.

A full PC can store heaps more things that I would like to have in it instead of the old log book stuck in the drivers door. Things like emergency contacts and first aid hints as well as a bush mechanics section. The music is a bonus as well but I an 8Gb walkman for our VMS that does us.

But as I say each to his own.

But I would consider doing it for a full version of Oziexplorer and be able to hold all the maps and data in it instead of a max of around 7Gb on an SD card. I find it hard to trust a system that relies on a removable media.

Let me know if you post any photos.

Thanks

Phil

Currently CPU under Passenger seat, Amps under drivers seat. Working on building case to go behind screen. Just a few minor details to work out. Then I will have entire system in dash. Once up and running I will be looking to sell custom systems I have a friend who is big in IT and writing programs. So watch this space we will be setuping web site. So will be able to buy with or without software.

Thanks

I will keep my eye open.

I think under the seat is okay provided you do not intend to ford any decent creeks/rivers. Check this out: bad water crossing.

Listen for the comment about under the seat.
