I’ve got a “Grunter” compressor which when I needed it most didn’t grunt any more. I know, before anyone says it, I should have known better! However, after dismantling it to see what went wrong I found the reed value on the piston sh*t itself. This appears to be the only weak spot in an otherwise reasonable unit. So I got to thinking if I seal up the air intake hole on the piston I could relocate the intake on to the compressor head by screwing a one-way valve onto a threaded hole I drill in the head. This would make a reasonable second unit and yes, I’ll get a recognised unit this time! Has anyone done this or thought of this before? Has any one got any suggestions as regards what I could use as an intake valve ie heat resistant and fairly simple.

Darling SuperCheap which was previously Marlows will look after you with a redesigned replacement part probably free of charge.

What you need is a check valve (also called poppet valve) You can get these from Blackwoods (or any other engineering supplier) You can get them in sizes right down to 6mm. Working pressure 160psi and working temp is 100 dgrees plus. Go for the all stainless steel type (body, spring, poppet). As a price guide I bought a 3/4 brass one with viton seals about two months ago for less than $20 (trade price) from Blackwoods, as you'll only need a small one(6mm, 1/4) I would imagine the cost would only be a few dollars.
