Hi Guys,

Just found your site which is terrific, but puzzeled by a few comments on the Nissan Patrol 2.8lt. I have just bought one about 6 months ago (don't intent to do much towing) and have been very happy so far.
Some one on this site said to watch out after 160K as you'll have problems. What should I be looking out for.

Thanks in advance,

Cookieboy

clutch which usually fries itself after the odd 150,000 to 200,000 kays, thou some people have had them up to 240,000 (me) and its startin to slip now.
Should you have any dramas, give Direct clutch a call, they'll do u a good price.

the head, you run her too hard the head will go soft and warp, which results in blown gaskets. Run into any problems, Give Gilberts Cyilnder Heads a call.

3rdly.. they're a slug.. i own one and its a g0ddarn slug... i'd do anything to give her a bigger power boost. Already contemplating a engine transfer.

Cheers

Tom, try a Turbosmart Boost Controller, I fitted one to mine when I had it and it brought the turbo in about 450-500Rpm sooner, 3" exhaust helped also. My two cents worth.

Cheers Tom for the reply.

What sort of prices are you looking at for a engine transfer?

I spoke to a wrecker and he said that you have to replace all the engine mounts, gearbox, etc. Plus the cost of a new or reco 4.2td engine.

Is it worth it as I have thought about it as well or do I save some more and get a second hand GU 4.2TD??

John,

What turbosmart boost controller did you use? As there are a few different ones available. And if you have any more info that'd be great mate :D

Cookieboy,

Im just looking at buying a 4.2d engine and rebuild it myself with a few extra goodies in it eg . bigger bore etc and have the heads done as far as i can :D :D, then whack on a huge turbo or a pair of small ones. Yes you'd have to replace EVERYTHING that came with the 4.2td engine, mounts and all. They are boltable to the existing crossmember etc so no changes have to be made. Definitely not worth doin it as the cost of the engine transfer outweighs the cost of buying a 2nd hand 4.2TD. The only reason Im doin it is a few things... one. I dont like the looks of the GU that much. I reckon GQ's look tough. 2ndly the 2.8 has AWESOME economy which i couldnt believe coming from such a heavy truck - 8-9 litres /100 kms compared to 14/15 out of the 4.2s and worse out of the 4.8s
Guess the main thing abou the 2.8 is the fuel economy. She's a great 4x4, raised 5 inches with 33's and looks great. Only needs some crawler gearing in her and larger tyres for offroad. Basically nothing wrong with them as they're wrongly geared. if you run some 5.2 diffs from iceland. she'll go like a rocketship. But downside is fuel economy which can be made up by running larger tyres.

Cheers
Tom

Try the GQ list for some ideason powerups etc.

There are things that go on GQ's but different on all models.

Also have a look at gqpatrol.comfor a list of things that go wrong with "SOME" GQ's..

Enjoy it.. They are no rocket ship, but they are very reliable.
