I have arranged 2 x 180 A/H batteries in series to run my 12V appliances. Do I still have 180 A/H @ 12V or just 90?

Thanks

Hi there,

If your batteries are 12 volt and you have them in series you will have 24 volts at 180 A/H.

If you run them in parallel you will have 12 volts at 360 A/H.

That is in theory !!!

To clarify matters. Series is + to - = voltage X 2 Parallel is + to + is amps X 2
If you connect 2 12volt batteries in series you will blow up your equipment.

My apologies - I should have previewed my post better. I have arranged 2 x 6V 180A/H batteries in series to run my 12V appliances. I take it then, that I have 180 A/H at 12V.

Thanks

To be precise,

Batteries in series, add the voltages, AH stay the same.

ie if you put a 6V 100AH battery in series with a 6V 50AH battery (you wouldn't normally for clarity only) AH rating would be 50A. Normally you use the same battery types, two 100AH therefore AH would be 100A

In parallel, voltage stays the same add AH. ie a 12V 50AH & a 12V 100AH would give 12V at 150AH

Cheers

To clarify yet again (I'm doing well) with batteries in series AH will be that of the battery with the lowest AH rating.

Hope this all makes sense.

Another aspect to consider.
I've just installed a second 12v battery paralleled with the existing in our caravan.
The battery supplier tipped me to connect the appliances between the two batteries.
IE: Positive take off from battery #1 and Negative take off from battery #2.
That way both batteries are draining equally. If take off is from one battery only it will be working harder than it's mate.
Sounds like good science to me.
