Thats a bit of a pandoras box question.

Where are you? What do you drive and/or tow?

Have you any idea of what you want to do or see?

We took eight weeks for our trip but that included the Ghan to and from Darwin and all times for the total journey back to Canberra. We also did an ocean eight day luxury cruise and a drive on the bitumen and a drive through and around the Gibb River Road. We also drove around as many gorges and mountain ranges as we could including a 360 degree circumnavigation of the Cockburn Range.

It took ages of internet browsing and forum scanning to pick what to see and do in that short time. We have more to see and will go there again.

Give us a few parameters to work with.

Phil

And we have not seen it all.

You have come to the right place to ask that question. A thread a few days ago - view it here - is a good place to start.

Have a look at the articles in the boxes on the rhs of your post. Also if you type "Gibb River Road" into the search box you will get heaps of info. You can also search the blogs for info - we have a couple of blogs on the Kimberley.

The Kimberley is vast and spectacular. You wont see it all in one trip, but any trip, even a short one, is better than none.

Cheers,

Val.

Did the Gibb River RD in June this year and spent 21 days just doing the Gibb. Then some people do it in a week, depends on what and how much you want to see. That was 2 days driving from Perth to Derby ( start of Gibb ) and then 3 days driving home from Kununara also taking in the Bungles on the way home.

MV Diversity II out of BroomeJike John and Val said up the top just after my post. Look around on thios site and put Gibb River Road into your search engine and see what pops out.

First you will have enough time in four weeks to get there and back and see the major parts of the GRR. And to instill in you a "want" to go back and do the rest. I don't know about shooting though. Try contacting one of the stations and take it from there. Home Valley was the most hospitable one we stayed at. I am sure you can find them.

Fishing. Heps but watch the big lizards that have a taste for anything edible on the banks of ANY water.Broome Tourist mob should be able to guide you there. We did it from a cruise.

Places to see. You could start by downloading and reading these:

And then scan what everyone else has to say again with lots of note paper to remember it all.

Our favourites were: The coastal cruise on Kimberley brochures. Winjana Gorge and Tunnell Creek.Mitchell Platear and Mitchell Falls. 360 degree circumnavigation of the Cockburn Range.

You may have difficulties bringing a licenced firearm in WA - regulations are strict and you need to demonstrate good reason to the WA Police when applying. You would need to have your permissions in writing from any station that allow it (they well may not) when you apply.

For sightseeing, the Gibb River Road is fantastic. We went fishing with the people who run the campground near Kalumburu and caught the best fish ever. You can only keep what you can eat whilst there, so heaps of beauties went back to live for another day. Read about it in My Blogs here.

We toured in 2008 and took three and a half weeks from Derby to Kununurra, then spend a few weeks touring from Kununurra, including a few days at Purnululu.

Allow 1 month, minimum.
You would need years to do the Kimberley, but then again, time and $$$ play a big role.
Better check your state by state gun laws, and get permits, ect the rules are strict in WA
I too enjoy a good shooting trip, but when we did our trip, to the Kimberley, I took no rifles.
Cheers Bucky.
