Hi,

I was wondering if anyone has been around the Cobberas area lately, we are looking at doing the McFarlane flat track and cobberas track and then heading up towards Davies Plain track. We are towing camping trailer which is fairly capable. Any info would be great.

Cheers.

Hullo Wolfleigh
A few thoughts come to mind -
* Are you contemplating doing this with 1 vehicle? If I recall correctly, Parks Vic recommend a minimum convoy size of 6 vehicles. While I think this is a bit OTT, 3 would, IMHO, be a minimum. It is remote country with poor comms.
* this is a challenging track, particularly if it has been wet. Having travelled these tracks a year ago, I personally would not take my (very capable) CT, particularly going in off the Snowy River Rd and out on to Limestone/Black Mtn Rd - I think you could end up doing a lot of winching up the spur out of the Suggan Buggan River.
* track damage would be a real issue, particularly, as I said, if it had been wet. It is a good example of the saying "just because I might be able to do it, doesn't mean I should".
* it is one of the few tracks I have been on where I understand vehicle roll overs have occurred not infrequently, including, if I recall, 2 in one group.
* you state your CT is "fairly capable" .... hmm - if you do decide to take it, you might find "fairly" is not enough, unless you are prepared for the possibility of considerable damage.
As to Davies Plain Track, this was closed until well into summer 2011 when we were there (in late 2010), due to a wet season. Might be well to contact Parks Vic direct.
Cheers
Andrew

If you can't drive it I certainly recommend walking it. The loop from Dead Horse Gap down to Limestone Creek and back up to Tom Groggin is beautiful. But remember it's the high country and the weather can turn quickly and nights are still cold in the middle of summer.
Have you seen my marbles?

Hi Wolfleigh, we are also planning to do MacFarlane Flat Tk next week. The reason being that we have been on the Cobberas Tk twice, coming in from Native Dog Flat campsite. The Rooftop Map shows a very steep section which we got to. But it is all dug out with large rocks and ruts too big for my standard Pathfinder. Rigs with 2 inch lifts, diff locks and big tyres would probably make it - but gouge out the track more. I doubt if any rig towing a C/T would get up this section. From 2008 to this year the erosion was noticeably worse and since this track is never graded it's not going to have improved.
Hence this trip we will come in along the MacF F Tk. According to the Ranger at Omeo the steep bits on it are not as bad as Cobberas. Time will tell. Get onto Google and put in MacF F track and it will give you reports and pix and so you can better judge for yourself if it is doable. Maybe it would be better to Camp at Native Dog, leave the C/T there and do a clockwise loop along Cobberas, MacF F to Barry Way then back along Limestone Rd to camp.

Cheers, Warrie

Hullo Warrie
According to the BoM site, Suggan Buggan R is at 1.7m not too far from the place where the track fords it and the Ingeegoodbee R may also be quite deep.
Last year when we went through the latter was probably 0.8m with far less rain in the catchment, although we copped it soon after in Omeo when we had 70mm late afternoon/overnight.
BTW, apart from 1 Patrol, the rest of the convoy had LCs - 2 utes, an 80 and a 100.
Cheers

Hi Warrie,

How long would you allow to do the loop you were talking about? Let me know how you go with your trip next week.

Cheers

Thanks for that Andrew and Jen. Yes it is looking a bit dodgy weatherwise with more heavy falls predicted for this weekend on the Snowies. The Ingegoodbee level could stop us as could the rock ledges. With a combined age of 240 the 4 of us won't be doing too much pushing or digging LOL... Warrie

Thanks for all of the info, i spoke to the parks office at Omeo and i think we will park our trailers up at Native Dog flat or somewhere and do a day trip. Is there any camp areas that any one could recommend close by.

HI Wolf.... From Native Dog to the top of the nasty bit is a good hour of bumping along at 10 to 15kmh. But stop and enjoy the views, have a cuppa etc. Total Cobberas and MacFarlane Flat is say 60km with a time of 6 hours. Then return on the 2WD road also 60-70km so 1.5 hrs. Plenty of travellers camp near where the tracks join and walk to the source of the Murray. We are camping at Willis or Pinch River and driving along MacF Tk to then do the walk and then back out again. It will be a big day but there's no longer day than the 22nd with nearly 15 hrs of sunlight. Get the Rooftop Map if you can.
BTW in 2008 we did a 180 km trip from Native Dog to Benambra ,Mt Hope Rd to Tom Groggin fording the Murray then return via Davies Plain Hut and Limestone Tk. It was too much in a day - it's rugged and slow going up in the High Country....W

Not a bad flat at the Playgrounds to camp. Its on the Cobberas Trk at the Blackmountain Trk end.
