Looking at caravans and found what we wanted in a second hand Supreme Getaway but concerned about the weight. Tare is 2300 and we'd be pulling it with a 100 series naturally aspirated toyota landcruiser/diesel.
Anyone done any figures or got any idea what sort of fuel economy we could be looking at?

Russell,
May be of assistance here - 80 series 1HZ naturally aspirated donk, pulling a 2440Kg tare / 3500Kg total, 19ft Bush Tracker (80 series is Nov 1996 build = 3500 /350 tow capacity from factory) gave us figures of 4.25 k/L including touring Tasmanian mountains regions.
Since then we have had our service people put on an ATX turbo at around 220,000 k's on the clock and have done Adelaide to the Kimberley and Adelaide to Cape York etc with figures around 4.75 k/L We are very happy with that as all up, with Modified 80 series GVM of 3350Kg + van at 3500 Kg = 6850 Kg we have a VERY Heavy rig on a 4.2 Litre donk)
Cheers Mobi

Tare weight is going to be conservative on that van. Pulling it with a N/A 1HZ 105 series is going to be depressing on the highway and hills.

Pulling it with a bolt on turbo onto a 1HZ is going to be expensive if you don't monitor the engine EGT's... overfuelling will kill a 1HZ if it's not understood and watched.

Back to the 105 and caravan, I reckon you will be doing around 19 litres/100km taking it easy and it gets worse from there. It's a 3 ton 4wd with 96 KW...without tacking another 2.5 ton on the back.

I have a 105 and had the 1HZ and for towing it was abysmal. Add a turbo, the fuel was still hungry, but performance a bit better, but you have to manage the EGT's.

Put the correct motor into a 105..the 1HDFTE and you have a brilliant 4wd and towing vehicle. ;o)

Andrew,
I fully endorse your comments. They reflect my experiences with my 80 Series with aftermarket turbo and egt gauge. They are not a good tow vehicle if you have expectations of keeping up with traffic and not slowing down noticably on hills or into headwinds. My average fuel consumption over a 20,000 km trip was 19l/100km and I don't flog the motor, don't use 5th gear to tow and average about 80 kph cruising. But the reliability cannot be questioned, its been just brilliant.

I'm moving on to a different vehicle soon that will tow my 2.2 ton carvan with a bit more ease. I'll miss the 80 series off road ability though.

A 1HD FTE auto 100 series would a be a beautiful tow vehicle but they are not easy to get hold of and for their vintage are not cheap.

Andrew and WBS, your figures are right, I tow a 2 tonne Royal Flair Tuff Roder with a 1HZ 75 series fitted with an after market DTS water cooled turbo, like WBS I never tow in 5th, travel at about 90kph and my fuel figures always average out at about 19l/100km. I am happy with these figures and find I easily "round up" Pajeros and similar vehicles towing 'vans when the going gets hilly.

Never mind the TARE Russell; what is the ATM? This is what you will most likely be pulling when you get it loaded up and water tanks full. What is the maximum your Cruiser can tow? Look also at the GCM for your vehicle.

Regardless of brand of tow vehicle, you will use a lot of fuel towing a large caravan, and i don't think the difference is huge between different vehicles.

We were originally towing our Bushtracker with a 3 litre td Patrol, and got five kilometres per litre. With the F250 carrying a heavy load and the van packed heavier for longer trips we get around 4.5 kilometres per litre. Not a fair comparison due to load differences, however our caravan has a similar TARE to the Supreme you are looking at.

G;day Motherhen,

We get similar numbers with our 4.8 petrol Patrol and I support your comment about vans being heavy and if travelling the car is alo fully loaded - to the max I suspect. This suggests to me that a GCM is a more realistic way of looking at fuel consumptions. Additionally the type of country to be visited may influence things, ie more off road will increase fuel usage.

Kind regards

PS Hope all is well out west?
