A cheap gps will do the trick. More accurate than a speedo and doesn't care what size tyres you are running.

You will need to check the regs on changing the speedo. I believe if you change the speedo it must show the same as the original. There are heavy fines for changing the speedo reading. If hte old one still works, what's the advantage of changing to digital??

Josh.t is a known fact that original speedo"s are not correct +/- 5 to 10 K's. I have checked my speed with those road side speed check units and found my speed to be * K's out. I have been pulled over twice for speeding in school zones but have had my Gamin to prove my 40 K limit. I set my Hillspeed to the speed limit and it shows a 4 to 8 Km difference. Still have my clean licence and no points lost.

Esarby, That may be true, which I already knew speedos arent 100% accurate. In fact manufacturers are allowd more tollerance than we are. Still doesn't change anything. The Law states a speedo must show the origanal KM's if changed.

Josh. with the Hillspeed you are not romoving the original speedo. it is a GPS unit that gives you the correct speed and you set it to the speed limit with warning Lights or sound if you exceed the limit. You can also see if your original Speedo is out of sync.

The origanal poster asked about changing his speedo, I was just pointing out the legal requirements. Don't think I'll bother next time.

Julian, It may be worth while checking what the regs are for changing the actual Speedo, If you ever decide to sell the vehicle it may cause problems if not done right. A little research now might save headaches later.

Hi Julian,

I have recently put a classic style digital speedo in my old F100.
You will need to buy a pulse generator to put into the speedo drive on your gearbox.
You should be able to get a pulse generator to suit the Toyota box.

You may also need to make a custom dash pod as from memory your original speedo is a funny shape. I made my dash face out of alloy chequerplate and it looks pretty nice.

Their will be about 4 or 5 wires to connect including 2 from the pulse generator, a power feed and a feed from your dash light circuit so it lights up at night.

My original speedo was almost 15km/h out but an advantage of the digital speedo is it can calibrated to match your gearing and tyre size. I have 36" tyres.
It is good to have a speedo that reads correctly now.
