Bird call - we think ......

We are puzzled as to the bird (or otherwise) which makes a call which we can best describe as "Bolly Bonk" and is made both early morning and evening with some clarity and resonance and repeated often.
We have two Field guides for Australian Birds, but have drawn a blank trying to identify what makes the calls.
We have heard this call across wide regions of the Outback from Western NSW to the Kimberley and south to OSuth Australian Riverland regions.
Any serious ideas will be welcome and humorous ideas enjoyed.
Cheers - Mobi

apologies for the onomoeopieatic semantics, I meant what you wrote could sound like it was a Pobblebonk frog, true, not joking, or pobbling or bonking.

That thought occurred to me too Porl - had a look in my "Wet and Wild" book and the Banjo Frog or Pobblebonk's call is described as "sounding like a deep slowly repeated 'thud' or 'bonk' when the caller is in water, and a loud 'toc' if calling from land". So I'm not sure now if that's what is being asked about.

I think I have heard that unknown call but cant place it ATM.

Cheers,

Val.

Hi Mobi,

Maybe it's a peaceful dove??

They have a call a bit like that and are fairly widespread I think.

Cheers Heather

Can't help Mobi but this topic reminds me of my first visit to the gulf country years ago when I was totally fooled by the barking owls. Woof woof they barked early evening so off I toddled to see if some poor cattledog was in trouble. Never did find one.

Hahaha..

yes we thought someone was hiding a dog in the national Park campground at Lake Tinaroo a couple of years ago and then realised that a barking owl was calling....

Hello again to all,
Heather and Lex gave us our answer. Thank you very much.
The call was definitely the same as the Peaceful Dove call and better described as "Doodle Doo" in the link given.
To all, we had a great thrill to read all the helpful answers, and of course a great laugh at the humour. Superb forum stuff all round.
Cheers - Mobi
