Intending to spend six months touring WA and NT, two adults and two kids (6 & 8 year olds). Trip will include off road tracks ( Kimberleys, etc ).
Is a Prado TD large enough to comfortably and safely carry the family and all our gear including fridge, recovery gear, touring tent, two spare wheels, etc, etc for extended camping and travel or would a larger vehicle (cruiser/patrol) be a better choice?
Does anybody have experience of a long trip, with kids, in a prado sized vehicle?

Evvo,
I don't believe the difference in size between the Cruiser/Patrol and the Pajero clones makes a great deal of difference. I'd seriously look at a trailer for whatever car you choose. The reduction in weight on the wheels makes the trip safer, more comfortable, and less likely to result in tyre/suspension failure.Bob

Do it fine.

Cargo barrier and roof rack for the light bulky stuff. Easy job.

Evvo,

Not a problem although for sure you'll need a roof rack. Our previous 4WD was a Pajero which we toured the NT and WA with, although mostly was just the two of us until our son was born. A well set-up Prado or Pajero makes a very comfortable and capable touring vehicle.

There is nothing wrong with the Prado TD. Plenty of range and reasonably comfortable. Watch the fuel quality though - have a couple of spare filters (maybe fit a water trap). 2 x kids 6 & 8 though - do yourself a favour (& the kids) and take a trailer (a good one). 6 months is a long time. You need an uncluttered vehicle - makes a huge difference when driving. kiddie boredom will take over - let them have their bikes to ride (i know - helmets and stuff as well) around the place. gives them time to enjoy and you. Also you just never never know what adventures will befall you along the way - maybe even a couple of kayaks or a canoe would be good. Just have a great time and don't rush. rgds
