Hi,
Got to thinking today whilst trying to clean the windows if the Patrol, whatever happened to the product called "Bon Ami". It was available in a block or a powder and the buy line was " Hasn't scratched yet " with a small chicken pictured !!
From memory it was really good at removing crud from glass.
Is the something available that will do the job as
well ?

I think Gumption have used the "hasn't scratched yet' slogan in the past. I don't have any here to confirm that, just a geriatric memory flash. I certainly also remember Bon Ami.

Try SILVO silver polish. Let it dry then polish of with a dry cloth.

I can remember people putting Bon Ami into carburettors to try and bed in piston rings! How it can do that without scratching is a good question.

I once used a twenty cent sized pile of BonAmi in the palm of my hand passed under the intake pipe (with filter removed) of a 306 Chamberlain idling at 2000rpm to remove the glazing on the bores. Oil consumption was that bad ...using a gallon a day...that we resorted to this...and it worked!!. Plus the tractor went on to work another 5000 odd ours before we replaced it...only using about a quart in a 100 hour oil change. Would even think of trying this with any of the modern engines...would probably rip the cylinders clean out of them.
Cheers Keith

I will second the metho/water/newspaper system. I use it all the time and it works best for me.

I am sitting here typing this on my laptop and looking up at the kithcen cupboard where sits 3 'Bon Ami' dove tail jointed wooden boxes that once contained ' one quarter Gr.Cake' and labelled, The Bon Ami Co., New
York.
My wife (60) was given these boxes which were handed down from her grand father many many years ago. On the front and back of the boxes there are 3 small yellow chickens (the paint is still
bright) with the caption above the chickens reading, "Hasn't scratched yet'.
I often wonder if these are worth anything. Might be able to swap them for a slab for xmas.
cheers,
Wayne

You know... this is what I miss about the EO
forum. Usually this sort of friendly general chat between interested members is knocked off pretty quickly as "off topic".... but was why I always dropped in to see what was happening years ago. Hmmm I wonder if 'off topic' has triggered a flag somewhere?
Um
wheels, tyres, turbo, gps, outback.... that might save me :-]]

As far as I knew it was still available. I just finished a bottle, (is that what you call a cardboard cylinder?) Got it on my next shopping list. I used it regulary in the bathroom/
kitchen. Was not aware of those other uses as mentioned above.
Mine was given to me by a motel cleaner.

I think JIF may have replaced it...bon ami used to form a paste similar to Jif....brought back some memories with the name Bon Ami...when in boys
home we had to use it every Saturday morning and clean all the windows...at that time I didnt care what sort of job it did...i just hated it because of what it represented for Sat. mornings !...lol

God, memories. Haven't thought of Bon Ami for years. Just the same as Ajax Powder - an abrasive, just add
water. Jif is the same these days. No doubt we pay a lot more to have it pre-mixed to a paste :-)

GeeTee,
I had stains on the side winsdows from a couple of rusty bolts on the roof rack and used Autosol chrome polish to remove it.
Cheers Dave.

GT,
Glassies use a product called cerium oxide on glass that is
water stained or scratched.
You should be able to pick it from Hogan's Wholesale at Smithfield NSW. I used to deal with them when I was in the trade 25 years ago :-) No connection apart from that...

Hi, Thanks for that info. I will give them a call later in the day and if it's not too expensive get a 500g tub and give it a go. Nothing much else has worked ! Still have to try the Bon Ami .
