Have just returned from
camping at Cooloola Beach and had our stay ruined by the numbers of Lace Monitors(20 or more) hanging around our
campsite and going through our site when down fishing.I have camped at numerous sites in the bush and on beaches and have never seen them in such numbers and totally unafraid of humans. My chief
cook whos no great fan of big lizards was a nervous wreck at the end of the first day and things were not looking good for staying much longer at this site, but after checking out sites further north and south of us it appeared they were every where along the
camp sites.Always very aware of keeping a clean
campsite and rubbish , food scraps bagged and put out of reach we had these monitor scaling the tent posts, sniffing around the 4wd even when we where standing not 20 ft away. No amount of throwing sticks and rocks at them made them the least unafraid as they returned within minutes. WE did notice that whoever camped at the site before us had buried some rubbish in the bush and the monitors had dug this up and no doubt were looking for more. Given the amount of rubbish
bins along
the beach,it shouldnt be too much of a problem even for a lazy ignorant moron to dispose of their rubbish but then again they are probaly the type that puts the right hand blinker on at the last moment on when you meet them coming toward you and you have indicated that you are saying left.Great fun for idiots driving pretend 4wds.

these are all parts of the joys of unrestricted access to Teewah and
Rainbow beaches, as much as we will all complain when something is done about it, something needs to be done to reduce the numbers and improve the practices of visitors to these areas.

I am afraid youre right chopper,as much as I like wildlife, the numbers and fearlessness of the monitors was a bit much even for me .
And unfortunately as much as I hate speed cameras and their use, they would have a picnic on Cooloola Beach.

I agree totally, however i's not just the "rent-a-fourby" set to blame unfortunately. Last year we were having lunch at Bymien Picnic ground at the
Rainbow end of the Freshwater track. There was a group of two couples who were pensioners... old age pensioners.. one would think old enough to know better... feeding the resident monitor despite the quite large
signage on each and every table here advising against this practice. Then they stopped feeding, although the monitor was still hungry. They thought it was amusing to see this poor creature hopping over their bloody hotplate that was still hot in order to get to the leftover sausages!! My kids were (loudly) questioning these peoples insensitivity, and we were (loudly) agreeing, but it had little effect.
Just like the saying "you can lead a horse to
water but you can't make him drink" unfortunately there are people from all walks of life who will ignore whats best for everyone/everything/everywhere in order to amuse themselves.
I tell my children that we must make sure we do the right thing, hopefully others might learn from our example.
Just my opinion
Cheers
Brian
