G'day all,

Just wondering if anybody could give me any clarification if the Tom Groggin crossing is possible at the moment given all the rain in the ACT area?
Plan was to cross around 27Dec11 towing a camper trailer and travel south along the Davies Plain Track.
Any info would be appreciated.
Regards Will

Will it apprears the rain last weekend made very little difference to the Murray as can be seen on the plot for Biggara (open link). which is the furtherest upstream depth station & not that far from Tom Groggin. Not sure how the 750mm depth relates to the actual crossing but it is well below minor flood level.
What I'd be more concerned with is towiing a trailer up the red clay hill on the other side if there's been any recent rain (even with mud tyres, lockers & a winch). We had members of our group same time last year that couldn't get up & had to take the detour right around via the Snowy River.
Davies Plain Track too is subject to weather when towing.
Cheers Craig.........

Crackles

If the hill that you are talking about is right next to the fence just after you turn left from the crossing road then I think that you will find they have closed the steep part and built a new road, not track, around it.

Last we were they was around Jan 2011.

Craig,
Thanks very much, that is great information. Just another querry, is red clay hill as you come out of the Murray River crossing or is it further along the track? From what you have stated the camper might have to stay at home this time for the Davies Plain Track. I didn't want to get to the crossing then have to go all the way around the top to Corryong.

Hi Will, if you click on Davies Plain Track it will link to the pix and info for it. The distance is about 15 km from the Murray crossing to the hut. You go a couple of k's and cross the creek shown in the pic and then you start the climb which turns into the slippery clay. I remember that on the day we took the pix it began to rain while having lunch at the hut. There were dozens of horse riders in their wet weather gear so it looked like a scene from the Man from Snowy movie. But we high tailed it back down to the crossing and the clay was already getting nasty. Keep a close eye on rainfall at Thredbo and Khancoban.....W

Biggara data
PS A link to the Murray Darling Basin web site will give live river data. I suspect that the level at the Tom Groggin ford is 20 or so cm less than at Biggara. So at 0.87 cm at 8am this morning it's getting a little Pathfinder unfriendly as I have crossed it at 0.75 ( so really 0.55 cm) which made it fun but safe.... W

Thanks all for the comments. Sounds like a great track but one to be monitored for conditions.

Will 76,
This area up here is expecting 4 days of rain starting Xmas Day. I doubt that taking a camper trailer through at this time is a good idea.
