For a three car family trip to
Cape York I plotted the whole trip. From
Canberra to Cape and back
home in Oziexplorer using plot points on the PC. I added audible files with turn left and turn right instructions and many which included salient points, touristy stuff and safety etc info, about the actual point that we were approaching. I spent ages and didn't even bother following it. We changed our mind and when it came down to the minute detail it was a waste of time. Yes. We did go through the major towns but when off road some tracks were impassable and some did not even exist any more.
I will never bother with that preplanning detail again and go back to the old ways. Now I study the maps, make notes of major towns and stopovers but after that we "wing it".
I learnt very quickly that a street style audible GPS device is of not much use when off road. Especially when for some reason you change your mind.
Don't get me wrong. GPS's are great in their roll. I use the GPS to aid me in following a route we work out on the "paper map on the bonnet" at a cuppa stop or
camp.
Just something to consider.
