Hi Ann F,

Finding out the towing capacity of the vehicle should be pretty easy but what are you towing, what weight is the van, trailer etc and what is it's load or hitch weight that will be transfered to the vehicle? What year was the car made. Has there been any modifications to the suspension, and where are you intending to tow. Does the setup require electric brakes etc.

A fair bit more info is required before anyone can give you any meaningful advice

I'm actually looking to find someone who has had a 4 x 2 and find out how it has performed for them.

Hello ANN i have posted below ?? re my 2WD drive Colarado, If you are towing the Coramal poptop the Toyota will walk it in, you do not say if you are going for the Diesel or petrol motor, [ personal choice ] and a whole new debate ??
diesel will pull it very easily, but those toyota 4 ltr petrol motors are also pretty good and would handle a 16' poptop with ease !
I went 2 wd this time as i do not do any hard 4wd tracks, only dirt roads and along the river tracks, as long as you have ground clearance 2 wd is all you need
My last vehicle was a 4WD and in 5 years i think i only engaged 4wd twice

I Drive a Holden Colarado dual/cab 2 WD Ute tow capacity 2500 kg, Ball 250kg
I tow a Lotus 19' Full ensuite van All up tow weight 2340 kgs It tows the van well, could do with a little more power on Big hills but it does the job quite well.
Mine is factory fitted Duel/Fuel, I get 15 L/per 100 k around town and when towing I average 25 ltrs per 100 k
So if the toyota 2WD is your vehicle of choice go for it, but make sure your choice of van is within it's Towing limits Rgs dazren

Ann if i tow on Petrol I get around 19 litres per 100k, but my van is a lot heavier than yours and if you are going the petrol motor, it is bigger than mine and has more torque, so your consumption shold be less than that. dazren

Hilux 2WD & 4WD have the same tow capacity.
From 2005 onwards it's 1200Kg with the light weight tow bar and 2250Kg with the heavy duty tow bar.
Toyota also recommend that a WDH be used.
Check the vehicle handbook for further infiormation.
