G'day all, I am looking at a 1993 Landie and was wondering if you guys had advice,(or know where in
Perth i could ask) ie; what to look for, any inherrent problems, ect.... I understand that there was a problem with the timing belt and it breaking prematurely - but am unsure of any details.
Any advice would be very much appeciated.
Thanks a bundle.

Is it a 200Tdi or 300Tdi? The changeover was in 1993.
200s had no issues with timing belts but make sure it has been religiously changed every 80,000km.
Some early 300s (1993-1995) suffered from premature breakage but there was a fix offered by the factory. Find out if this has been done (involves replacement pulleys).
Gearbox - early mainshaft failure is common due to a lack of lubrication of the splined joint between the g/box mainshaft and the transfer gear. Symptoms are excessive drivetrain backlash. Again there is a fix, which is either a crossdrilled transfer gear or an oiler on the end of the mainshaft. A vehicle of this age would either have the symptoms or have had the fix done by now.
A less common problem is internal breakdown of the injector pump due to poor quality diesel. This will result in the engine failing to stop when the key is turned off due to small metal fragments jamming the fuel cutoff solenoid.
Most importantly, look for a full service record. Have the vehicle checked out by a reputable Land Rover expert. Kevin Falconbridge at Rovertech in Bentley is excellent, probably
Perth's leading guru, and if the vehicle has a fault he will find it.

Tony, if you're North of the river you may like to try Russel Booth at ARB Osborne
Park as
well.
And if you don't watch out he'll sell you half of their stock for Landies as
well so leave the plastic at home.
Only joking, both Kevin and Russel will give you good advice.
Alan.
