Hello. I have a Forester and am considering putting my 2 spare wheels on the roof. I am aware of the center of gravity issues involved. My question is more related to their security ie how do people secure them to roof racks to stop them moving and secondly so that they are there when returning to the vehicle?

Thanks in advance

Where are you off to that you would need to take 2 spares?
If you are still running H/T tyres change to A/T which are quite a bit 'tougher'.

The last 2 big trips I did (Pilbara/Rudal R and Jigalong to CSR/Well 5), we put the spare on the roof and filled the 'hole in the floor' with a casing/tube and other spares etc. that were only needed in an emergency. For normal trips I just put the table and chairs and the tent on the roofrack. I have a cupboard system and frig mounted at the back door, so it would be a pain to get to the spare, but I haven't ever had a puncture (YET !!).
A member of the SA Club I met at the Eclipse in SA in Dec 2002 had an extra spare bolted to the cargo barrier which was postioned behind the front seats (rear seats removed)

I don't belive that Forester spares would be high on the list of things to 'knock off', so security shouldn't be a problem. I would just tie the wheel down into a corner of the roof rack with one of those ratchet tie down straps. Otherwise make a 'bracket' - threaded bolt to attach to roof rack and drill a hole in the bolt to slide a padlock through.

Good luckSubaru Forester
