Still shopping for Chrissy presents for hubby...thinking he might like a temperature gauge - one that records max and min temps. When we're
camping he often comments that he'd like to know how cold it got overnight or how hot it was during the day. I think it's a hangover from his old days working on a research station where one of his jobs was to record weather info for the Bureau of Meteorology. Have been in touch with our local Dick Smith store but no joy there as their gauges only record current temp not max and min. Any suggestions?

Jaycar also sell these type of gauges. I have one that measures the volts from the battery, inside and outside temperature and time. I could not find that particualr one of their website but I did find a similar one here
Good luck

Jason,
Is this the one you have here?
If so, how have you found it? How is it mounted in the car (ie. stick-on) and how difficult was it to install the probes etc?

Melissa, that one is a XC0116. Great unit, as it measures volts, but doesn't have max/min temp, only current temp in/out. Really recommend this if you don't need max/min recording.
I'm having timeouts too.

Melissa
Your link did not go to a product. I found the one that I have here
I have one mounted in the hilux through a switch. This switch is then connected to vehicles battery and to trailer battery when connected through the trailer wiring plug. This is so I can check the camper trailer battery whilst driving. I am going to buy another and attach it to the fridge holder in the trailer and have it connected to the battery when stationary and have the temperature sensor inside the fridge.
I am happy witht he one in the car although you have to be careful where you place the sensor to get an accurate temerature reading most of the time. I have
mine inside the bullar although when the vehicle is parked so the bullbar is in the sun I do mnot get an accurate reading.
The sensor is easy to install as it comes with a self adhesive back. It is very light so no need for strong glue.
I have the unit on a piece of bent alluminium which is attached by double sided tape to the console where it meets the bottom part of the dash. I have not had any problems with it moving or getting in the way.
Hope this helps
Jason

The XC0116 does record min and max temps for inside and outside temperatures. (My one does)

Thanks Jason & Gerry,
Sounds like it could just be the thing. Jason, I was thinking if we hooked it up to the car auxilary battery we could use it to monitor that battery. However, I like your idea of hooking up via a switch. I'm thinking we could also monitor the trailer battery too! And to think I was merely looking for a thermometer...silly me, LOL!

Joc45 the XC0116 from Jaycar most definitely has Max and Min temperatures.
I have one here in a sealed packet in front of me
Continuous Electronic Backlight
In/Out Thermo
Max/Min Memory
Digital Voltmeter
Battery Analyser
Voltage Guard
Calendar and Clock
Ice Alert
We have these fitted to all our work vehicles as standard.
They are without a doubt the best and most accurate instrument around of their type.

William,
Whoops! my bungle. You are quite right. I stand corrected.
In that case, Melissa, what more could you ask for?
Still can't help with the Stevenson Enclosure tho.

Thanks everyone,
I've just ordered the Jayco unit. Hubby will luv it. Downside is I bet he cons me into wiring it up...he hates auto electrics work and reckons I'm better at it than him anyway. Just a cop out I reckon but sigh, I'm just too good to him, LOL.

Hi
Penguin,
How big is it roughly and how does it mount? Do you think it is suitable for use when camping/travelling?

From memory it's about 15cm tall and 10cm wide. There is a mounting bracket supplied but it's a bit flimsy. The bracket is detachable so it can be left mounted in the vehicle while you take the device out. I admit that it's a bit large but it's the only one I know of with the max & min recording.

Hi Melissa
I think I own what you're looking for.
It is an indoor and outdoor, current max and min temperature, with a clock and current, max, and min humidity - I bought it from the Australian Geographic
shop (in
Darwin's Casuarina Square - I bet that brings back memories!) for about $15. I was in there recently and it is still a current line, so they should have one in
Perth.
Hope you get one!!
Regards
Rob

I have a RadioShack unit (Tandy) size is approx 90x30x10mm. It measures indoor and outdoor temps and has max/min memory for both. It is backlit in blue and is a pretty good looking unit. Comes with a removable mounting bracket. The cable length on the outdoor probe is around 3m, cost around $25 from memory.

I have an Engel thermometer. It reads and records min and max temps for inside the fridge and the inside car temp. The lead is about 3 metres. It can be used for outside vehicle instead of fridge temps. Cost varies from $25.00 to $30.00. Available from Engel fridge Dealers. I put velcro on the back of the guage to mount it. Thanks to everyone who replied. Have decided to go with the Jayco Voltmeter/thermometer unit as the dual functionality appeals.
