Bourke to wilcannia then menendee lakes

Hi all,
I am new to this site and typically a beach dweller this time of year.
We ( myself ,wifey and 3 boys 13-7) are thinking of heading west for a few weeks and are wondering if the road via the darling from bourke to wilcannia is ok and whether there are adequate camp sites. Will be towing a trailer packed with inflatable boat, kayaks, and other kid toys. We are obviously ok with bush camping and looking to escape the wet period on the NSW coast and plan to leave after Xmas. If anyone could offer advice it would be welcome. Have a great safe Christmas. The marshs

Unfortunately the wet is not limited to the coast this time of year, we are in flood for the 4th time in 3 years.
The river is still rising (the last few days was 30cm + per day) and I would expect that road will be closed soon. If you want really good advice about that road, give the Louth pub (Shindy's Inn) a call. The peak of the flood was supposed to be around Boxing Day but I think that is being revised to a later date with higher water levels.
With the floods come midgeys, mozzies and lots a brown snakes too so it's really not a very hospitable place at the moment. If you are looking at coming in January, we hit 48 degrees on Aus day last year too......
I'd love to tell you how good it is but.....

We still have water flowing here in Chinchilla and if upstream gets more rain again we will have another Flood for The Christmas/ New Year period :(

Travel an extra day and get to the Flinders Ranges....much nicer I reckon. Wildlife walks and views plus some great tracks to drive. Not much water though, but you can come back via Renmark and float on the Murray?

This siteshows the Darling River roads closed in quite a few spots (make sure you have the Flood box ticked in the Traffic hazards list.)

For a guide to the Darling River Run - go to this site and click the appropriate box on the top tool bar.

Thanks to all the great responses and kind advice.... I am very thankfully that I just didn't head out ....
Now thinking the snowy area, but I can't wait for better climate and slightly less water in the Darling.

Merry Xmas to all those out there and our thoughts are with everyone effected by the floods.

Kind regards,

The marsh's

We had a very short few days out there in September and it was a magnificent site to see. Menindee Lakes from 90 to 110 % full, birdlife that is hard to imagine and scrub, bush and grass everywhere. If you do get out that way have a look at Copi Hollow, just before Menindee on the Broken Hill side. We hope to get back for a longer stay next year. Cheers,Bob.
