First of all, Merry christmas to all,
I have a few things that can be charged via cigarettte ligher plug and USB cable with a micro USB connection, My question is with a multitude of different devices reqiuring different voltages and charge rates, there are some subtle differences in the plug where the USB goes into but after that it's all the same

So, how do you keep track of what plug to plug into the lighter when they all sort of look the same?

What could go wrong if I use the incorrect lighter plug?

All USB charging is 5V 500mA.

It's part of the USB specification.

So in theory it should not matter.

Merry Christmas

Ross is a faster typist than me. ipads require higher amps than the standard.

I've since had a closer look at 2 different plugs and 1 was 500mA(bluetooth), but other was 1000mA( phone), what harm will it do plugging the phone charger into bluetooth speaker, or other devices that onlyrequire 500mA

Merry Christmas Shane,

It won't hurt. Each device will only pull what it wants, so your 500mA device will only pull 500mA from a 1000mA charger.

If you put a 1000mA device onto a 500mA charger, then the charger will be overloaded and will probably overheat.

Cheers

I have both a 240v and a ciggy lighter USB charging device. They have a standard size USB socket the same as a computer. You just plug in the USB lead and away it goes. AFAIK USB normal and mini are all the same standard and operate at 5v. ipads etc have their own plug on one end and a standard size USB on the other. You just have to make sure the charging adapter has sufficient capacity (ie amps) for your device, so get the biggest you can.

Thanks Rod,
My smartphone charger is 1000mA (5V), would that harm my blue tooth speaker if used to charge it, it has a 500mA charger

Ipads need 10 watts or 1 amp, Iphones need 500ma. So if you are using an Ipad you will need a higher rated 12v usb charger otherwise it doesn't matter. Iphones will charge quicker off a 1amp charger.

I have a USB cigarette plug thing and it will power the GPS quite happily but won't help the iPhone with it's USB lead at all.

For that I needed a dedicated plug charger.

I have a Sony Ebook.
I bought a ciggy USB device to charge the Ebook.
When connected to the ciggy USB the screen on the Ebook says "USB device Connected"
When the Ebook is connected to a laptop USB the Ebook screen says "Battery charging"
Do I need a 240V. Sony charger and plug into an inverter then plug that into the ciggy socket ?
