hey lads, i just upgraded my trusty 2L petrol hilux to a beaut 96 SR5 dualcab 2.8 diesel.I give it a oil and filter change every 5000 k but i hear that diesels tend to build up with gunk due to insufficient revs. Is this correct? I usually hit about 3000rpm between gear changes and it sits on 2700-2900rpm on the highway. Is that about right?

Joe,
the gearing must be shorter than in the Discovery. 2700 rpm would see about 130 kph. Also, hitting 3000 between changes sounds a bit high. Maybe a set of 32 or 33 inch tyres would slow the motor down a bit.Bob

hey Bob,
yeah hilux's have quiet low gear ratios to start with and it's still got the stock SR5 alloy's with 225 75 r16 tyres, which don't help with highway revs. I get around 2750rpm at 100kmh! I need bigger tyres don't I.

G'day farmer & all members

Interesting that you should mention that diesel gets a build up of gunk due to low rev work.

Wouldn't mind some other comment on this aspect. I always though that diesel motor are good for prolong low rev work like a heavy tractor etc. High rev is not exactly a diesel's strong point.

Or perhaps some high rev duties may be good for it?

Cheers

Wil

I think there may be some confusion regarding low revs verses low power.

Diesels need to be worked hard occasionally to clean them out.
This is not the same as reving the daylights out of them.
Some towing ,long uphill or generally heavily loaded will do the trick so the engine works hard.

Extremely high revs, or lugging at too low revs never helps.

Up to 3000rpm before changing sounds fine, but accelerate at full throttle, not gently.

On early 2.8 3l diesels oil thickening was a problem if you did not change oil every 5000 klms and worked at high altitudesas well as letting the engine lug at low revs under load with large throttle opening
On later 2.8 toyota added a high altitude compensator to top of injector pump as well as changing diff gearing to a higher numerical ratio to make engine rev more at a given road speed
The oil thickening was normally only a problem if oil changes were not done every 5000 klms as per the manufacturers schedule
If your injector pump has a vacuum diaphragm chamber on top it is a later type with a high altitude compensator fitted (i think a 1996 will have this)

I had a 1994 hilux for 6 years. Even fitted a turbo to it a 93k, changed oil every 5k and did not have a problem with the engine. Very strong but you must change your oil every 5k. Change your filter as well it only a Z9 $6 worth.

Hi farmer joe
I have a hilux 3ltr with after market turbo ,had the same problem with
high revs 2900hundred at 100 kys,I went to cooper tyres which are
30m in diameter larger fixed the problem, just dont go to large in diameter
it kills the performance of the vehicle.a friend of mine went about 50m
larger with the 2.8,can not use 5th gear ,fully loaded with a boat on
the roof in to a head wind, anyway that my 2bobs worth have a safe christmas
& new year

I just traded my Daihatsu Rocky, very similar 2.8l T to the hilux (same bottom end I think), used to do almost exactly the same revs as what you are talking about, never had a prob.
