Shortened Plenty Highway trip?

Hello, I am currently in Alice springs and plan to do some travelling for 3-4 days so what are your experiences of Plenty Highway? Since the distance is quite huge and I have limited amount of time I wonder if the trip can be shortened i.e. perhaps the latter part to Boulia skipped if it is not of particular interest?

Hi Anders,
We travelled the Plenty in early August and I'm sure you could have averaged 80 km/hr easily, we camped at Jervois and the Georgina certainly all of it was worth seeing. If you intended going there and back I would at least go as far as the Georgina.

Cheers

Thank you, perhaps dumb question but with Georgina I assume you refer to the Georgina river since I cannot spot any Georgina location on my map or I am completey wrong?

Thanks again, since I really need to pay attention to the time I wonder how many hours drive you would estimate that it takes from Georgina to Alice Springs?
Also, would you recommend any must-sees along the road if I need to conserve my time and so need to be choosy where I spend the time? Thanks.

Anders,
Provided the road is in a similar condition as at the time we travelled it you should be able to drive to the Georgina River in 9 hours each way (Alice to Alice 18 hrs) that is not allowing stops for photos and other breaks. Looking at the photos we took we visited Gem Tree, there are things you can do there, camped at Jervois photo after Jervois with the Nissan and T-Van dwafted by a massive ant hill and various photos of plants and birds. We thoroughly enjoyed the drive and hope to visit there again, there was also very little traffic along there. Remember what someone may enjoy you may not, but if you like the 'outback' I'm sure you will enjoy it. Let us know with a pm when you get back your opinion of it.
Hope this helps

Cheers

I did Gem Tree resort to Boulia in a day (to beat the rain). Alice to Gem Tree is only another 140 kms, all on the bitumen so figure that one out. I left Gem Tree at about 6:00 am and was in Boulia by 5 that afternoon. (They closed the Plenty and the Donohue behind me and I was probably the last vehicle out).

Hope this helps

The Plenty is usually used as a one way drive, either a shortcut or just for a change of scenery. Have you thought of making it part of a round trip, out via the Plenty and back home via the Sandover? Try this for size.

Another option might be to travel out on the Plenty, then up Binn's track, to Sandover, and back to the Alice. Or do this in reverse.

You could make a few days out of it by stopping at Gem Tree, and do some fossicking, or travel out to Jervois(haven't referred to a map when writing this), and overnight there too.

Just being near Harts Range, and watching the morning/evening sun on them would be magic.

Bob.

Seen it all, Done it all.
Can't remember most of it.

Well, I am back from the trip and made Alice Springs go Bolia and back in just four days which was a bit intense and in retrorespect fem or six days would had been more suitable. Going back the same way was not that fun and going a way around would probably have been better but considering this was my first time travelling in in the outback I think I did pretty well, a second time would probably be even better as I now know what to expect and could do better planning in advance.

Having said that, I still had opportunity to see very nice scenery that definately was an experience. However, I would say that the Queensland part was not as nice and in hindsight I would probably had spent my time more wisely in the NT part.

I was also positively surprised by the condition of Plenty Highway, I had assumed it would be quite bad but I had no problem keeping at least 90km/h for at least 90% of the road.

Hi Anders,
Glad you made it there and back, sounds like you enjoyed some of it. We often do a reconnaissance trip like that always leave something to go back to. Did the Georgina have water in it?

Cheers

Well, I regret to say that I did not locate the Virginia river so is it supposed to cross Plenty Highway? In that case it must have been all dried up as I did not recognize it, on my map there was also a small location called Virginia but it was about 50km North of the highway and it was too late in the day to give it a try. Overall, pretty much everything seemed to be dried up to me.

Sorry, that should of course be Georgina and not Virginia river as it would have been rather unlikely to stumble upon that one. :)

There would have been a bridge over it and it would have been about 70 kms from Tobermorey on the Donohue highway sounds like it had dried up thanks for the info.

Cheers
