Hi all and seasons greetings. I have a Garmin Streetpilot C510 gps which is now 4 years old. Last year signed up for "lifetime map updates" but when downloaded newest map recently it will not load to gps because there is not enough free space. Contacted garmin and was told that file is too big and my gps can no longer be updated. Not the answer I was looking for. Thinking there must be a way, has anyone been down this path?

Shop around. I bought a new GPS just before Christmas with a 5" screen with lifetime map updates for less than I could buy lifetime map upgrades for my old Garmin GPS. JB Hi Fi seem to be the best at the moment.

Hi

Cant really help, though word of warning for others - my understanding is that "lifetime map updates" refer to the life time of the unit ...not the owner, as one may first think. Garmin decide when any particular models "lifetime" is up - which appears to be now for Garmin Streetpilot C510's....bit of a bummer if you laid out some cash just last year.

With some Garmin map products (i.e. those that come on DVD/CD) you can load the map product onto your PC and view using Mapsource and/or BaseCamp. You can also load whatever secton you like to your GPS via the mapping program so if there is not enough space for all of Australia you can leave areas of least interest off..but in your case where the map is downloaded and cant be manipulated with Mapsource/Basecamp you are stuck with the whole full size map product.

If its too big for the GPS units internal memory and you cant choose the SD card (if it has one of a suitable size) you have reached a dead end as far I know.

Cheers
Greg

The c510 does accept Cards.

Maps & Memory
Preloaded street maps: yes (regional)
Includes lifetime map updates: no
nüMaps Guarantee: no
3-D terrain view: no
Built-in memory: internal solid state
Accepts data cards: SD card (not included)

Get a 2gb Card and see if it will go on.

Thanks to you all for the advise. I will try a SD card but not too hopeful. If no good the next step will be shopping for a new gps. Clive
