Hi Guys, Thanks to all the people that have been answering my questions lately about hilux's & patrols.
Today I got a GU 3 2002 4.2td st cab chassis at the government auctions for 36k with 49km on it, great car so far..... this arvo that is. ARB Bullbar, ARB towbar, ARB turbo timer, new alum. tray, 5 x new tyres, cruise control, air etc. All on it at the auction.
Pretty happy with the price........ now to spend some time & money doing it up for some trips.
Spring hangars are straight but I will be carrying some heavy loads so is it advisable to get them rienforced now? if so how? & what about beefing up the springs?

Thanks again to all & now that we have a vehicle capable of getting us out there hopefully we might get to catch up with some of you in time.

Ga,day Rowler . Sounds like a good buy , i had to buy most of that stuf to put on mine . As for the spring hangers , i would get them dun . A peice oy rsj right across the top of them will do it . You will have to move the brake lines from on top of the hanger . Sit the rsj on top of the hanger , there will be a gap between the rsj and the shazie ( thats not right ) , you then have to make a braket to go between the two , and weld them togeather . Dont weld the rsj to the spring hangers through , to allow for some movment . Not how i did it , but this is how i was told over the phone to do it . I had to bend mine back down into place befor i could fix them , so i would recommend that you do them befor thay do bend .Why go overseas when you can ExplorOz

Thanks Errol,
I think I get what you mean, lay it across the top of both hanging over the ends above the shassis, fill the gap between the rsj & the shassis & bolt or weld to the shassis, but not to the hangers themselves therefore allowing them to move a bit but not upwards.
Is that correct?
Took it for a spin tonight & goes great, only one problem though. The key doesn't work in the reserve tank filler cap, There were two GU's that both had new trays for the sale both made at the same place.... so I think that they may have got the caps mixed up, I will get in touch with the buyer of the other one if I can to find out if he has the same problem.

Youv,e got the right idea Dave . Id,e weld the brakets to the shassis , but bolt the rsj on . That way you can still remove it if you need to .As for the other coments , ive also put extra heavy duty springs plus poly airs in also . Now carries the weight quite well .Why go overseas when you can ExplorOz

Congrats Rowler, If you are going to be carrying big loads have you thought of fitting Polly Airs as they now make them for sprung vehicles , I find them great on my 3.0ltd GU especialy when it's loaded for a trip & towing the KK. Regards Bob

Not an expert on the matter ... far from it, but I seem to recollect welding the chassis may lead to stress related problems (read fracture).

I know they are welded together at the time of manufacture but I think they then are treated to relieve consequent stresses.

As I said, not sure at all but maybe worth investigating. Better to be sure than have something serious break up the scrub.

I think trucks have warnings about not welding as well as not drilling the flanges etc.Fidei defensor

Thanks Rosco, (is that Dukes of Hazard fame)?? :-)
Assuming that you are old enough to remember the show.

I'll check the welding & drilling thing out.

Thanks Rowler (dave)
