Garmin GPS reliability

This post is my own personal experiences with Garmin GPS's

1 Etrek Vista, good GPS but died after 7 years, probably OK

2 In carNuvi GPS ( wifes car) two years old and still going well

3 Nephews in car Nuvi, died after 2 months, given a new GPS as replacement, still all OK after further 3 months

4 My in carNuvi GPS, died after 2 months, took 3 weeks with no GPS until I was sent a refurbished replacement, 6 weeks later, the speaker has died on the replacement, and I am overseas right now using it. Still 5 weeks before I get back to OZ before I can do something about it, and I need it working right now!!! Back to the GPS in my phone, AGAIN.

Also getting Garmin life time updates working has been a nightmare st first but Garmin seem to have got their software sort of sorted.

Would I buy another Garmin, NEVER, EVER.

I have found that the Nuvi does sometimes fail in the speaker area.
Pull the power out then turn unit off.
Wait 30 seconds, plug back in and away you go.
At least this works on the 4 units we have at work.

Had a Nuvi 1490, and it is basically dead.
Killed itself on recent rtrip to Cape York.
Resets itself all the time.
Had to rip out the mini SD card in Melbourns the other week, wipe the pins on my shorts, and then replace it.
That worked long enuf to get me to my destination, and then it started again.

It is now out of the vehicle, replaced by a Chinese Double Din Multimedia media unit, running " iGo 8", and Ozi Explorer.
Nice (so far)
Cheers

We've got several Garmin's from the very early 75, 12XL and an Etrek which all still work, although the 74 is very slow just like it was when new ;-))
We also have three Chinese, two 4.3" and one 7", all three have performed faultlessly despite many thousands of cross country and outback tracks and roads. They all run Igo for street nav and Oziexplorer for proper maps. All three cost around $200 new, Hema DVD for the maps and for about $350 total have a perfect nav unit. I also know of at least another dozen or so that are running the same config also without any probs.

Huh, my 1490T has the street guidance data in memory . The SD card is for the Topo map.

I had the reset problem at Cape York using the mini SD based Topo maps , and I believe it is because of corrupt data on the map.

I have never had a reset problem using the street guidance software.
I have had 3 Garmins, A GPS V which still works after 10 years or so ( but what do you do with a 10 year old GPS?) , a cheapo 265? about 4 years old and a 1490T. All still going strong despite harsh conditions on dash of 4WD on GRR, Tanami, Plenty, Cape York, Strez, Oodnadatta etc etc .
Only problem has been reset with the second release Topo software.

Just bought the new Etrex 10. Got it at one of the sales last week for $119. Want it for bushwalking and cycling as as a backup in the car. Great improvement over the previous Etrex models - but you've got me worried now - hope it lasts 10 years like the Garmin 11+ it replaced!

I've had a 1490t for about 10 months now, Got the additional Topo maps as a freebie with it.

It works fine for a while then after maybe half an hour resets and I have to punch in the "I agree" garbage again as it reboots
.
It also has a habit of the voice sounding very "Dalek" like now and again.

Was considering returning it under warranty myself, but the fault is very hard to replicate as I said it can work fine for a little while.
