hi all been in and out of this forum just reading as i just bought an 2007 ranger and have no idea about 4wd driving! and now finally i just signed up as my ranger is slipping out of 5th gear and into neutral when crusing on the highway.
seems to do it at least once every highway trip we do.

questions are
what is the problem ? or problems
does it need to be fixed ? if its not fixed will it blow the gearbox up ?
how much is it going to cost me ?
and should i drive it another 800kms ? this wknd as im off and away for new years break.

thanks in advance

Ask the previous owner if it did it while he had it, what will he do to fix it, if anything, is there a warranty on the vehicle, will he help defray the repair costs.

Answers
1. May be worn or broken selector spring..............or much more
2. Get it fixed, it may not blow the gearbox up................but it might do.
3. How long is a piece of string? it will depend on what needs to be done.
4. I would think seriously about not driving it that far, perhaps to your nearest gearbox specialist would be a better idea.

Others may have different opinions, but in the end it's up to you to decide what you do.

Hi Adam, My old Triton did this on the way home from Cape York last year, you will have to have the 5 gear replaced and I found that if you can not do it yourself it would be better to get a replacement from the wreckers. You can still drive it as I did for some 10,000 klm or more but not in 5th gear. Sound like it has towed a trailer in 5th gear for some distance loaded. The cost of mine to replace was $2,500. But buying the gear and doing it yourself cost $340.00. When you fix it do not tow a trailer in 5th gear or this will happen again.

Adam a,

There's an article in 4WD Action about buying used Mazda BT 50 (Ranger). It mentions a problem with 5th gear jumping out. According to them it is a $5.00 part but the box has to be taken out to get it fixed.

hi guys thanks for your help.
hmmm.... hopefully it is the $5 part
i might try and see if i can borrow my mums car, if not ill be driving in 4th and taking it easy!
yep it had electronic brakes instruction booklet in glove box so im guessing it was towing a heavy trailor in 5th.
i bought it at an auction on line so i didnt have the luxury of taking it for a drive and having a look before buying.
i did however ask a heap of questions of the guy auctioning the car.
funny thing was the car drove perfectly home and for about 3000km's and now the gearbox has started playing up. about every 100km's it drops out of 5th.

5th gear was/is a problem with Couriers and Bravos and was supposedly fixed with the BT50 and Ranger but - no. You may also end up having clutch problems as they are getting to have a few more kms on them and the clutches are failing. If you drop the gearbox put in a new HD clutch. rgds

PS having bagged the 5th gear in the Mazda and Fords I was on a trip when a GU dropped 5th and also had a friends L/C 100 drop 5th as well - both had done extensive towing which is not recommended in 5th gear in any vehicle.
Slow down and relax......

Not only towing in 5th, but constant everyday use of 5th, under 80kph, will weaken the selector etc. A reluctance to change down, when overtaking, driving up hills or general point to point travel, all weken the system, of what is, on many vehicles, almost an afterthought.

I had a Nissan Skyline('78 model, not one of these later fire-breathers). and I buggered 5th gear by fitting bigger tyres, and then overloading the drive train, by not changing to 4th, going up hills in Great Divide. Still driveable, but only 4 forward gears, and no reverse!!!

Was advised by a parts supplier we used, not to drive Toyota utes, under 80, in 5th. Used this advice for many years, and never had a gearbox problem, even with lots of "different" drivers.

Bob.

Seen it all, Done it all.
Can't remember most of it.
