G'day all

My wife and I came up the Hume Hwy just before Christmas and needed to have a pit stop.

Went past the Gordon VC Rememberence Rest Area as we remembered it was a disgrace the last time we used it and went on to Chowne VC rest area.

This area and toilet were no different. It was an absolute pig sty.To say it was a slur on our VC winners would be an understatement.

The toilets are nothing more than a glorified 'long drop' with colourbond walls and roof.

The taps for hand washing either don't work or are out of water.

Stains on the floors and walls look a lot like faeces.

The RTA take credit for these rest areas and toilets.

If they, or anyone else are going to build these rest areas then they need to remember that they have the responsibility to clean them on a regular basis. Not just once every once in a while.

If they can't do that then they need to remove the signs about VC winners and put them where they are not insulted by these rubbish/dumps and pig styes.

I agree with you on the disrespect that these facilities reflect on the VC recipients for which they are named, but I am more disgusted by the animals that do the damage to the facilities. Having worked for a contractor in another state that had the duties of the upkeep of these type of sites, most are tank water supplied and if an idiot leaves the tap running the water is soon gone.
We even went to the trouble of installing spring loaded taps that had to be held on to use, and some clown decided a stick braced against the tap could hold it on and empty the tank. Another clown obviously had enough time on thier hands to empty a weeks worth of toilet paper out of the dispensor, this takes commitment as the paper has to be unravelled manually before the next roll engages.
You really have to wonder about the intelligence of these sort of people !

Hi BooBoo ,
On our recent trip(6600k's) traveling with three kids we were bond to use road side toilets, From Grafton to Bourke, Public toilets were clean, not spotless, but clean. Silverton for the Gathering and on to the Flinders Ranges, Again clean.Adelaide, couldn't complain, Great Ocean Road, clean, Just north of Melbourne the toilets started to get more graffiti and dirtier.
Once we crossed the boarder back into NSW, they became disgusting.
One, I can't remember were it was, well, I've never seen anything like it, No Seat, there was crusted stuff everywhere, over walls, taps, back of the door. This wasn't just put there in the past day or so, it's been there for a good week I would guess. Ended up driving up the road and digging a long drop. As you say, the RTA, or what ever they are called now are responsible for these, but they don't. Rubbish laying around empty bins, broken glass and fast food takeaway wrappings as well as disposable nappies.
I knew I was back in NSW, just by the amount of rubbish on the side of the road and the state of the toilets.
Hmmm

I feel really frustrated that, Firstly, these facilities and the rest areas are part of a project to honour these VC winners yet the RTA appear not to clean, maintain or repair these facilities and Secondly, the grubs/animals that have no respect for these VC winners, or the facilities put there for their use.

I written to the RTA and will post their reply, if and when I receive one.

I have also written a letter to the Editor of the Telegraph.

I won't hold my breath waiting for any response.

A lot has to do with when these places are cleaned.

Over the Christmas period the rest areas around here leave a lot of the desired, and they are not cleaned over the holiday period simply because local councils usually have the contract, and all the buggers are on leave.

You don't have to be a brain surgeon to know that a lot of people travel over the Christmas period, yet, the morons who run councils and the R.T.A. couldn't give a stuff.

I'll bet here and now, that if I went to the rest areas at Springs Creek, Dolo Hill, MacCullochs Range on the barrier Highway, where there are toilets, there would be no loo paper and they would be disgusting.

I've written to the Minister for Local Governmdent, the Minister for transport in N.S.W. about this in the past. You get the usual politicians propaganda, and nothing happens.

Please BooBoo post back orif this thread gets archived post in another if or when you get a reply, be interest hear what spin they put on it.
The grub that do this, know they either wont get caught or the court will be not give a harsh enough penalty to deter them.
Also, what about bring this to the attention of someone who is involved within the Armed forces who is passionate about VC recipients, I don't know what the right wording or phrase is about this kinda thing.

Cheers.

Boo Boo,

Agree with you regarding the state of in particular NSW toilets on the Hume Highway.
I would hate to be from a family named by one of these "Rest Areas".

One trip back from the North Coast of NSW whilst stopped at a "Rest Area" the contractor arrived and did the requisite work and departed in about 14 minutes which included the emptying of bins and cleaning of the "facilities". This did not include the use of any water.

As long as organisations like the RTA (old name) take the cheapest tender then we, the people are going to get the cheapest work, if at all.

Cheers
Jim

And I hope I don't need to use the facilities in the near future during the holiday season!

The new excellent block with flushing toilets at the Lower Liffey Falls camping gound in Tasmania, were burnt to the ground!
The name of the access road to the camp ground? ..... Bogan Road!

We are currently paying the price for our inability to punish our children over the last couple of generations & now have bogan kids with bogan parents!

Maybe if they renamed them after prominent politicians funding might be available for their regular cleaning and maintenance?
Obviously they don't value their war heroes except when it suits them on ANZAC day.

Yes I agree,
But unfortunately this program is being cut back.
Weekend detention from Grafton has been cut back to nothing, cuts to save $$$. Apparently it is called home detention now, unsupervised.
Grafton use to have a gang of three guards and the prisoners would mow pensioners lawns, preschools and community parks not under council control.
They first stopped mowing the preschools, because the prisoners would know where 'Children were', then they stopped mowing the community parks, because 'it was taking work away from employed people' WT???
Now they have stopped mowing the pensioners lawns, It is cheaper for them to do home detention( No Guards to watch them, no mowers to maintain or vehicles to run)

But I agree with you, put prisoners to use for the community that they have committed a crime against.

You would probably find that there is a budget for the cleaning works already in place & there are 2 problems.
One is the person responsible is a slacker & not doing their job to the description. This is a problem in my local area with the regional council public toilets. One towns public toilets are disgusting, but the neighbouring town, under the same regional council, has exceptionally clean toilets. Same budget per unit. Just different managers & cleaners. One takes pride in their job & the other is a slacker & no body above the slacker checks his work. Got to get out of the aircon to do that.
Or secondly the budget is not big enough to cover the work required. To many admin workers are to lazy to get off their fat dates & do the job they are paid to do. All to easy to pass the buck in government instead of getting in & doing the paper work to get the budget up to scratch to achieve acceptable outcomes.
My observation of some of these government departments is that staff are more worried about passing the buck & checking how their super is going, or worrying about who is on & who is off the committee or who is in & who is out.
I have been transporting government workers around for 25 years & the longer I do it for the less respect I have for their positions over all. It's not very often you find one who is actually passionate or seem committed to their job like you do for most other types of workers.
We, collectively as taxpayers, are paying for these toilets to be properly maintained. Not to have shit left splattered all over them. Not to have no facilities to wash your hands. Basicly we are not paying for facilities where a man would leave these facilities & go down the road & dig a hole for his children & wife to shit in.
You can blame the grubs that foul these facilities. But our contract is with the administrators & they are the ones paid to provide clean facilities to us.
And paid quite handsomely too.

That's my rant on this subject.
I hate filthy toilets & despise overpaid lazy public servents.

Sorry I should have also added that in my opinion only a minor percentage of the population are toilet trained. This percentage reduces when alcohol is added to the equation.
It is no use comparing these filthy below acceptable standard toilets with ones that are clean. The same filthy un toilet trained grubs are using both sets of toilets.
It's just that one set gets less maintenence than the other.

Mannus is not far from here and each year for a couple of weeks before the local show a few of those inmates come to volunteer their services unguarded. I have had to manage a few as I was employed to do the same thing. They did call me Hitler a few times. Were even less impressed when I use to do the same job they were doing (and i'm disabled)

It is not just the road side loos that animals use. When was the last time you went to one in a supermarket/mall? They are cleaned daily, yet people think this is the place not to flush, lift the seat, miss the bowl etc. Makes you think what their own home is like.
Cleaners have also told me that womens toilets are alway worse than mens. Never seen a womans toillet, but judging what I have seen in the mens, it must be terrible.

All valid points and I pretty much agree with everyone, however let's not forget that it isn't the councils or the contractors who are messing the place up. Putting yourself in their shoes it's easy to see that it would be like standing under a waterfall of neverending crap (pardon the pun:-)). The root cause is the idiots doing the deed, they are everywhere and they are breeding. Dealing with them and their habits it would be easy to lose the will to live.

hi all
the same thing has happened in wa both north and south of bunbury at beaches near new tiolet blocks have been dirtied by what i have named two legged turdhouse rats
sorry to have to use that term on here but
there is no other suitable word to descibe the way these filthy animals spread excreta and urinate around inside the amenities
they have also burnt several tiolet blocks down to the ground after being rebuilt at great expense
i have often wondered what the houses are like where these pigs live
because none of them appear to have
ever been toilet trained in any way or form they are completely ferral

I wonder if an 'adopt a dunny' program might not work?

Clubs, groups, families could adopt a VC rememberence stop. They monitor, maintain and even decorate it.

A big ask... but then some people love to take on things like this, even if it involves a monthly overnight trip to do it. Maybe some funding for supplies etc could be found and a roster system.

Sometimes 'ownership' and pride in special places can make them even more special. I know that if my Grandpa who served at Gallipoli and was gassed in France had a special roadside stop dedicated to him, I'd be interested in taking it on.

Royce

There is a very well maintained Remembrance area for Vietnam diggers in Muswellbrook .

From what I understand it is mainly looked after by volunteers from the Muswellbrook RSL.

I spoke to a few blokes down the street this afternoon (one from Muswellbrook) and he spotted the President of the club with his cleaning gear at the toilet a few days ago.

It can be done I suppose,,, it just needs commitment from the local community..

Although my main beef is the names of VC winners should not be associated with the current disgusting areas. If they were maintain to a reasonable level it would be OK. But like some have already said,,Families of these heroes would be very disappointed and embarassed to see their family name in these places.

Hi All
Need to get this right, they are NOT IDIOTS that are filthy ANIMALS not pigs as that is disrespectful to the pigs. Half of the population was never associated with the war or Australian diggers of all conflicts. (not sure if that is the right word) So the Victoria Cross means nothing to them. ANZAC is only brought to their attention, at that time of they year not all year round. It only makes you wonder what their own home must look like, what about the motor vehicle they get back into with hands that haven't been cleaned. I feel sorry for the cleaners that have to clean up after them as it must be demoralising to open doors and find that mess. Once it is not cleaned properly the mess only gets worse each time after. My grandfather was a Gallipoli veteran and my uncles in WW2, my father was too young.

This country needs to get back to calling a SPADE a SPADE not a trowel or what ever name that comes to mind.

Until this happens the situation will only get worse.

Need to get back to name and shame of all of the offenders if caught, tougher penalty's, MAKE them clean them for a week with a sign posted to say who done the mess. Do the crime pay the price the price with your name displayed for all to see, not just a unnamed number. I for one would not like to see my name plastered on a sign saying I have done this.

If living in these conditions long enough they must become used to it maybe. But until you are made responsible for your actions nothing will change.

My rant for now.

You all have a great day
Holiday comes to a end tomorrow and have to head back home, to South Australia from the west bugger.
Cheers

Diggers Dunnies could be a good name for a short doco, travel film or something we can send viral on youtube, facebook, vimeo.
It could talk about the VC recipients, a bit of war history, a bit about the area, some Lake George cave and aquifer mystery and a short note about the disrespectful abysmal conditions public facility users are leaving them in.
I don't know anything about films but I know someone down that way who does so I'll suggest it to her. Anyone willing to provide the script and appear in the production?

But about public toilet filth I know a lot because I have cleaned them in my family's old holiday park (Kosciusko Mountain Retreat '88-'03). In the peak summer and winter seasons I cleaned them twice a day, each time took at least 1hr for each block. It was amazing how filthy they could get in just 12 hours. I often wondered what everyone's bathrooms and toilets were like back in their homes. Worst of all was having men walk past the cleaning sign and use the toilet in front of me when I was only a teenage girl, very disrespectful. I also cleaned the toilets at a boat building site, spotlessly everyday. Approximately 30 men used these each day and everyday I was cleaning off turds, boogers, grease, popped puss from zits and urine from the floors, walls and mirrors. This kind of dirt builds up daily and requires a lot of elbow grease and sometimes an iron stomach to clean. 2 things you can't expect from council contractors.

Unfortunately these days it's user pays.

A bit like free camping you don't know what grubs have been there before you or are likely to pull up beside you.

I've given up the fight and use Road Houses and Van Parks now.

Good to see someone is still fighting though.
