Greetings fellow ExplorOz correspondents from a new member.
I have a 2001 Disco TD5 Auto which comes out of warranty in March 2004.
Does anyone have thoughts / experience of specific items to get checked out before I have to start paying for repairs?
To date the only real gripes I have had have been with
1.intermittent SRS airbag warning light illumination which they tell me is joints which needed recrimping &
2.fuel economy of 22MPG (city) & 27MPG (country). Dealer's sales pitch was that I would get up to 37MPG !!
At 60000Km it runs like a clock, still on original Michelin tyres with approx 35% tread remaining, (mostly bitumen running & one trip to Dalhousie, Frenchline, Birdsville, Walkers Crossing, Innamincka, Dig Tree, Bore Track to Camerons Corner, Tibooburra, Broken Hill & back to Adelaide)
Hopefully many more trips in the next few years.
Regards
John

How about the extended warranty package. I know it's expensive but if you intend keeping the beast for a while ....

Then again ... is it available as an option?? It is for current models.Fidei defensor

John,
It sounds like you are in Adelaide. We bought a 2001 Disco TD5 Auto from Prestige Walkerville in September. It comes out of warranty in January so we bought a 3-year extended warranty with the vehicle. It is run by Swann Insurance and cost about $1500. We figured that one major problem could cost many times the cost of the warranty.
The Disco had 62k when we bought it and the Michelins had about the same wear as yours. We destroyed one in the Flinders so bought a new set, keeping the best three of the old ones as spares.
Fuel consumption is about 24mpg around the city. Can't comment on country running as so far we have always towed a caravan (20mpg), although on one 280km trip of mixed bitumen and low-speed dirt we got 32mpg. You could get close to 37mpg but it would have to be under ideal conditions.
Stephen.

John,
check rear axle seals for any sign of leakage. I am not sure about that MPG stuff but I got about 900 km per tank around town (10L/100km) and better on the hwy. Worse when towing. I've just changed over to the auto and its only on its second tank of fuel so a bit early to tell. I could hardly believe the trade in they offered me so I couldn't afford not to trade up. That option might be worth a look. When you factor in the cost of the extended warranty, a set of tyres etc it may look attractive for you too. You may get one with better fuel economy :-). Beware the fine print on the extended warranty - compliance can be quite onerous and the excess pretty steep. They will try to skid out of claims.Bob

The extended warranty conditions seem fairly reasonable, very similar to the manufacturers warranty. However we were advised by the dealer to stick STRICTLY to the service schedule, watching both kilometre and time limits.

Manufacturer's extended warranty is the way to go I reckon.. Dearer but a better option and if you have a claim just go to the nearest dealer.Fidei defensor

Check out the price of new injectors they are around the $2000 mark, might help to make up your mind which way to go. Col

This is something that I hear every now and then. I'm on Aussie and international Disco2 lists and I've never heard of a TD5 injector going bad though - not to say it's never happened. The good news though, is that apparently in the last month or so LR have dropped many of their parts prices significantly.

I run out of warranty sometime next year I think, and I will be getting the manufacturers extended warranty and continuing with LRassist.

Thanks Ross, Stephen F, Bob & Colin for your thoughts & suggestions.
I had a dealer service last week & mentioned Post 8998 re Disco & Rangie brake caliper bolts cpoming loose ; they claimed no knowledge of this problem.
Will also investigate extended warranty.
