G'd evening all,
Have been searching the web but have not found anything conclusive so far.
Looking for a Solar operated light/torch
Looking for a Solar powered personal fan ( no not the cap type :-) )
Looking for Satellite/CDMA phone . Globestar says they are coming but I believe you can buy them in Aus already.
Any ideas....Thanks.
Cheers,
Willem

Geeze Willem I thought the solar powered torch was an old Irish joke ; )
With the waterproof teabag - peddled wheelchair, I don't think I need go on.
I have seen the manual squeezy generator torch thingys around, which you can also get in a stereo/radio style as
well.
Can't wait for the Sat/CDMA to get cheaper.

Slammin........Yeah,
well my grasp of new techno stuff is limited.....all these combination things are useless....I need a light that can be recharged out bush without plugging it into the inverter.......I don't want to run a wire from the car to the trailer as my dashboard has too many switches already...will go and have a look at D.Smith or Tandy when I get to one of the bigger towns again......

Willem

I think Dick Smith sell a solar tourch Willem, as for the fan not sure on that one, but one could be made up using solar recharged battries and a battery opperated fan.

Can confirm also. Dick Smith have a wind up one, and also a solar powered / wind up combined. About $50. You can find them easily on the Dick Smith website under torches.

I bought a wind up torch last time I was in South Africa but the spring went pear shaped on me and it would not work. These units are made in SAfrica, as
well as wind up radios and all kinds of wind up paraphenalia. The torch was very heavy and also quite expensive( about $100). I gave it to a sparky mate of
mine to play with but he couldn't figure it out either. Then I think it went to
the tip..............
Thanks for all your feedback so far.

Thanks Richard.
I phoned Tony this afternoon. The Sat/CDMA phone is coming into the country in the new year and I have been placed in the queue for one. He is sending me all the relevant info, pricing etc. Apparently there are still some issues re licencing agreements between Satellite providers and CDMA providers which they are trying to resolve. I believe that the phone can also be used as a GSM phone? All very technical....I am still trying to work out how my CDMA works and I have had it 2 years :-)))

Hi, realise this is not solar but I use a 12v rechargeable hand held spotlamp from supercheap autos. recharge during the day when travelling in any lighter point -- only cost abiut $15 and has lasted
well and is realy
bright. Also picked up a battery pack/jump start unit, it has lighter socket built in and can be charged whilst driving, its not up to starting diesel 4WD but did start a V8 car -- would certainly run accesories through the night, all for $59 (chinese made) The real big heavy duty ones cost as much as fitting an extra battery !

Willem, have a really good think about the Satphone idea.
You may find it cheaper, easier and better to buy an iridium phone and a normal CDMA. Globalstar is not all that it is cracked up to be.

Thanks for that info. I already have a CDMA phone and like the idea of having a combination toy and not having to pay two service fees. But maybe you are right...have one of each and lessen the chances of problems. I am only on $10/month plan and I own my phone so the CDMA is fine.

Willem, I assume you want the torch for camping? I got sick of fumbling for the torch in the dark when the bladder needed relieving. Bought a couple of those cheap solar powered garden lights (approx $12 each) and set them up around
camp site (or favorite tree) for a soft light which is on all the time at night. Cheers

Thanks everyone for your replies and info. You have stirred the brain again and I can go on a torch and fan hunt.
The idea with the garden lights is interesting. Wonder what the Dingos will make of it :-)
