Ok the family are doing x-mas high country style , but we want to be off the 2 wd tracks to escape the populace (and hyundai excel yanks ) , we would like to be near a stream or lake , so how does top cossing hut, sandy flat , pineapple flat or
king hut sound or some where near lake william hovell sound?
Taking in to consideration heat , so shade is good ,
water near for a quick splash , and safety exits come a fire (worst case scenario?
Any one have first hand experience around here (mt striling area?)
We will be up there before school holidays start so we are hoping a decent pick of campsites before other 4wd fraternity get the jump?
and advice appreciated.
oh yeah got a navara 4wd that is fairly capable and plenty of maps and books on hte area just would like some extra gospel here i guess?
cheers

Hi Toonie
Plenty of maps and books, That's great but have booked in for map reading lessons as yet. Maybe Mrs Toonie will buy them for you for a xmas present. LOL.
You forget I was with you when you found every dead end track at Mt Disapointment. Diamond will back me up here. Won't you Diamond ?
Talk about the blind leading the blind.
Have you worked out how to get to
Melbourne yet??????????????????????
The Navara is more than capable just remember to straighten up your wheel's to keep you moving in the right direction. LOL.
Catch you soon
Regards
John

All the
places you mention are good, also there is the Howqua river at a lot of
places, Wonnagatta river,
Talbotville and
Dargo river.
A get together in Wonnagatta for NYE is still on the cards for those who like a bit of 4WD'ing but not to hard.
As for fires,
well take a look around you, who ever thought they would be that bad last year, a place like the Gatta is nice and open and large arears are slashed so you can muster at a safe location in the case of a fire.
If you are in a safe area cover your vehicle with a tarp and wet it down and keep it wet till the fire passes over, your chances under the tarp are a lot better than in a river with your vehicle burnt out on the bank.

"But we want to be off the 2 wd tracks to escape the populace (and hyundai excel yanks )"
Dude, hate to say it, but theres more toorak tractors hit the area then than anything else, with their 1 day old camper trailers with price tag hanging off, that they cant put up, new gas stoves with price tag still on, Portable tele's, videos, DVD players, etc etc...
All you can do is pick some VERY remote area and hope.. Busier than a 1legged man in an ass kicking comp up there Xmas time.
There was one spot on the Mt Stirling track next to a
creek that someone had one time, it was BRILLIANT, but Im betting its already taken now.

G'day Toonie, have you considered Cobblers Lake, seemed a great spot and the drtive up from
King Hut over the staircase would keep the Toorak Tractors out.
They would lose traction in their seats LOL
Have a safe and good breakne cede malis

You may be interested to look at the Macallister river. Some terrific spots to
camp beside the river and not too large so as to accommodate 100's of campers.Butcher Country Track
