Jason (macca)
I have a problem with my trailer left hand indicator. The indicator
has been tested on another vehicle and works. When I connect
the trailer to my ute, the left hand indicator on the trailer fails to operate.
The ute indicator works with or without the trailer connected.
Any Ideas?????? I have checked that wiring running into the 7 pin connector on the ute. All seems ok. Where else should I be checking?
Regards
Jason

Try cleaning or expanding the relevant socket/pin!

Try cleaning or expanding the relevant socket/pin! Also test it with a test light.

The first thing I would check is the earth. If you don't have an effective earth, the lights will do all sorts of weird things.

Ditto that, its usually an earth problem since the return connection goes through the light mounting screws and trailer chassis to wherever you have connected the earth common from the trailer cable. Do not relay on an earth connection to the car via the tow ball, this is really causing odd symptoms.
Other possible causes: poor contact to the light bulb, especially those long tubular ones. The filament of these is soldered to the conical end caps and I had one or two where this connection was very intermittent.
Poor current flow due to tarnished contacts in the trailer plug/ socket. Unless these are connected and unplugged frequently the brass contacts tarnish. I have to clean those on my garden trailer every time I use it since this is not a frequent event.

Make sure your 7 pin plug isn't wired up as a 5 pin plug. Yhis can sometimes and causes problems.

If trailer lights work on a nother vehicle and your vehicle lights work, check where the wire to the plug on the vehicle is spliced into the indicator circuit and the conection in the plug.

Hi Jason,
Sometimes the pin in the socket can work loose in the body and when pushed home into the relevant plug the pin is also pushed back therefore not making contact. Push the relevant pin/socket and check for any movement back into the housing.
