cooper creek ferry- how much water still around

Hi all,

We are thinking of doing a trip up to the ferry next weekend from Adelaide.

I was just wondering how much water is still there- how wide is the cooper at the ferry crossing ?

we camped there a couple of years ago - it was so dry and desert like then.

cant seem to find any recent photos showing the ferry/creek

thanks

mike

Hi Mike

I posted some details about this recently, but at this stage the ferry is still running. Even with the hot weather, the water is dropping slower than expected.

If you check out my Blogs by clicking on the links below, you will see what it looks like when full of water and birdlife. It should be still be running for a few more weeks, but Mother Nature has the final say of what happens up there.

Stephen,
thanks for that, i thought you might be the first to reply after reading your posts

i know it will be hot, but who know how long we might have to wait till next time the ferry gets used.

i will keep a watch on the road and weather reports for the next week
thanks

Hi Mike

Before making the above post, I first contacted my Transport SA contact to give you reliable accurate information. Like I have stated, the ferry is still 100% in operation, but Transport SA will make an inspection of the actual road crossing with in the next 2 weeks to see how safe it is for vehicles to resume the normal crossing.

Any work that has to be carried out will have to be done very quick, as their road maintenance gangs will start their leave on the 23rd January, so if the road is not back in action by then, the ferry will still be running.

The main Birdsville Track has to be safe for conventional vehicles (eg Falcons, Holdens and the like to cross safely) before the ferry is taken out of service.

Cheers

Stephen
That is very correct.
If the Track is Dry, and no rain about, I would take SWMBO's Getz to Birdsville.
No Probs

Hi Mike,

We were there mid August 2011, and drove down to the edge of the water where it was a good 3-400 metres wide over the track, a wonderful site. There is a photo in my last blog of this. ( Lake Eyre and then Where -- part 2.)

Regards ,
