Hi All,

I have been looking into dehydrated food to take hiking and to use while campaigning around Australia but am having trouble finding someone who sells a wide variety of individually packed fruits and veggies.

It would be good to try a few different suppliers out before the campaign starts.

Unfortunately using my own dehydration machine won't work because I'll be on the road for most of 6 years living out of a trekking cart. I think asking my Mum to do it could be pushing my luck.

Anyone know of any good suppliers?

Quite a few years ago I met a bloke who had walked the deserts. He had a cart and carried dehydrated food, and the provider had sponsored him. Now I cannot remember his name nor the supplier, but you probably know better than I do those that walk around the country, and you may be able to contact them and see who supplied them. Next port of call would be health food stores and camping stores to see if they can assist you with the name of suppliers.

Not a lot of help, I will admit, but perhaps a start point.

Hi
If my memory serves me right.....I think BCF carry some if you are close enough to a branch. You can also get vegies and dried fruit at super markets.
Good luck

I have looked at and tried the vegetarian meals they sell and they are too expensive and taste like rubbish. I need a good variety of individually packed veggies and fruits to prepare my own meals and snacks, preferably organic and dried without additives and can be ordered regularly from a reliable Australian supplier. I'm veggo, btw, so that rules out 90% of the hiking meals available on the market.

Thanks Jack.Trying out health food stores is a good idea. Can't find what I'm looking for in camping stores or supermarkets. I feel a bit silly not having thought about that already.

No experience with what they make (if fruit and vege or just meat based) or quality and taste but a couple of companies are

http://www.backcountrycuisine.co.nz/bcc/
http://happycampergourmet.com.au/
- the last one may be meat meals only

Hiking stores should carry some supplies.

Have a look at nut wholesallers.

Health food stores you will pay thru the nose.

In brisbane try "micks nuts" in west end, they wholesale and retail bulk nuts & dried fruits...its one of those tardis shops.....stacked to the roof high turnover...good range

I don't know perhaps they may portion and vacume pack for you..pays to ask.

some fruit shops and deli's deal in bulk fruit & nuts.

I hate to say it but some of the confectionaly wholsalers that sell to the public do nuts and dried fruit.

cheers

Thanks Bantam will contact Mick's Nuts. Have found a great fruit flat/roll supplier, Montys, at a market, no added sugar or other additives, made with seeds and all with a 12 month shelf life.

Have a look at this bushwalking site

Haven't personally tried these, so I'll leave you to report back if they are useful!

Looks hopeful. I'll have a closer look tomorrow. I have tried a few of those suggestions on past treks. Thanks
