Gday,
Just have a few questions requiring answers please:
1. My BJ40 has a AM CB with ofcourse an AM antenna, but i hardly ever hear any talk over it, any ideas why. Also the AM/FM radio in it doesnt have an antenna, i was thinking of mounting one, but would this interfer with the CB or is it simply not required with the AM CB antenna?
2. From what i hear, most peoples Thermostat housing corrode quite often in the early Landcruiser motors. I contacted Toyota and they wanted $240 total for the housing. That is a ridiculous price, regardless of the age of the vehicle. I was wondering where in Australia or more specifically WA, that sells Landcruiser parts (BJ40) for a good price? Also, is the thermostat housing from the F - B - H motors from that era - 1979 interchangable?
3. Where can i go to get a in detail manual on the B motor, etc? Im looking into renewing some parts on this vehicle to make it relatively more reliable, but i basically dont know this part from that, etc....
Anyways, i have more questions, i just cant think of anymore at this point....
Any info/help will be appreciated!
Thanks
Matt

In reply to 1. Hardly anyone uses AM CBs any more. Most use UHF. I doubt that the CB antenna and the radio aerial would be wired in together as transmitting wouldn’t do the radio any good (relatively large signal strength going into a unit designed to receive weak signal).
Mounting a aerial for the radio shouldn’t interfere with the CB provided the coaxial cables aren’t run parallel to each other for any more than a very short length. Further away the better.
Sorry I can’t help with the other two.

Matt,
AM cb's were the thing to have when I had my firts 4X4 in the early 80's. It cost $35 per year to licence! Anyway, almost everyone uses UHF these days due to the extra range, back then you could buy an antenna that plugged into both CB and radio, (to stop the vandals pinching my cb antenna), don't like your chances of finding one these days. If you have a few friends, pick up more units dirt cheap second hand and enjoy interruption free communication while out and about. They have a flat country range of about 20kms if set-up correctly. I still have 4 units that we use as you don't get the interruptions from outsiders like UHF.
Hope this helps

Why is it so stupid?? if its going to last another 20 years, its not really very expensive is it?

Also, it makes me wonder why it corroded in the first place. If you use a decent coolant and replaced it regularly its unlikely to happen. If, on the other hand, you used ordinary tap
water in your radiator you are now paying the price for doing it :-)

More specifically, there is a "Toyota" coolant avaiable that is more expensive and is red in colour. Am I paranoid?

.
The thermostat is not interchangeable with any petrol or 6 cyl diesels that I know of.It may interchange with a 13BT which is a turbo version of your motor.
Keeping a part on the shelf or 20 years waiting for you to come along is an overhead that gets charged to the end user..Be warned,no landcruiser part is cheap, just cheaper than Toyota if you look around
Some advertise under the spare parts section in the Qokka .The 4 Wheel Drive
Shop at 320 Gt Eastern Highway Ascot are good to deal with. They dont keep a huge range in stock but if you tell them what you want they ring around and get the best price.Never more than 24 hrs and they deliver in the metroarea for 5 dollars and free if someone drives past on the way home.
Another helpfull and fair priced
shop is Odin Auto parts in Balcatta on Erindale Rd.
The manuals for these are made by Max Ellery,Chiltons,Haynes and as
well there is Toyotas which is the most expensive but the best. Any parts
shop can order them in if they dont have them in stock. Ebay also have extensive listings and is worth a look to compare prices.
