Hello,
I have a need to connect up to the ECU on my 78 Series Landcruiser with the factory TD6.

The ECU for some reason is different between the 78/79 Series and the 100 Series with the same engine.

A Scangauge will work on the 100 Series but not on the 78/79 Series.

Does anyone know what I need to communicate with the 78/79 Series ECU?

Thanks,
Geoff

Gday Geoff,
I thought the pre 2005 100series people had the same problem.
This link on LCOOL might help.

It appears you need something that uses M-OBD protocol and not OBDII.

Thanks Phil,
I'd forgotten about that thread over at LCOOL despite the fact i've replied in it several times!

You are probably correct on the pre 2005 100's, I have no idea!

My 78 Series is a 2006 model, one of the last of the TD6's. Probably similar age to your 79 Series.

Thanks again,
Geoff

If you have a apple or android tablet computer or apple iphone or any smartphone using android, you can download an app called "Torque" from either's app market ($4USD). On ebay you can purchase either a blue-tooth or wireless OBD2 port plug for about $24. You will then have an effective monitor for the ECU functions and fault diagnosis. I've used it with my 79. Easy and effective.

Cheers Mick

Hello Mick,
I hope the "silly" season was kind to you and yours.

Thanks for the information. Your 79 is the TD V8, mine is the previous model TD6.

For some reason all the TD V8's and the 100 Series TD6 are OBDII and Scan Gauge compliant.

My 78/79 Series TD6 has a different ECU to the above models making what I'm trying to do very challenging!

For the princely sum of less than $30 I'll give it a go. After all I spent about $180.00 on the failed handheld!

Geoff,

Silly season went well. This video I found on Youtube gives a pretty good overview of Torque and the bluetooth OBD2 Plug.

Cheers Mick

Hi Geoff. Just wondering if you've had any luck as yet. I have a 2005 78 troopy with the hd-fte engine so interested in you success or otherwise. Cheers. Leigh
