Thanks to all who replied to my last post on this subject.
I have done a bit of research on this with the dealers and a few panel beaters.
The best discount on any 1 to 3 year old used 4wd (patrol or cruiser) was $3000. This was on vehicles priced from $32000 to $45000. These prices are what the dealers had on the cars before any negotiation or trade ins.
The discount on a new st 3.0 patrol was supposedly $8500 (based on full recommended retail)
The discount on a demo st 4.2 patrol with approx 2000kms was supposedly $10500 (based on full recommended retail)
Talked to 3 panel beaters in the
Lilydale area and all said it would cost $10000 to fix properly. I figured this figure was accurate as i explained that i was thinking of buying a vehicle and getting it fixed and would pay cash and all 3 said dont do it at the prices offered by the dealers. All said better to order a new one - which i agree with.
I am not seriously thinking of buying one but just thought i would see what was possible. Got to think that unless you could get $15000+ off new price that its just not worth the effort

I am a wholesaler here in
Melbourne , if you bring me a car thats had paint on the roof , I will not even look at it , let alone give you a buy price. So you need to think of the resale value . Just think about it for a sec . How hard is it going to be to convince me why a 4x4 has paint on the roof , I am going to think roll over .

Eric, Unrelated issue but being a wholesaler, could you please give me an idea of the price for a petrol 1999 dual cab 2wd hilux, white, manual, A/C, 60,000km, reasonably tidy. Dad is looking at buying one from a friend and is unsure of market value.
Thanks
Darren

Eric, resale is one of the main reasons i am not seriously thinking of doing this. The car may be cheap now but what about in 3 to 4 years when i want to trade up.
Anyway the quotes i got (ballpark figures) were for new bonnet and roof fitted and painted, and any side panel damage fixed as good as possible. Could you, as someone in the trade, tell this fix had been done? I have to admit it is not something i would pick up when looking at a used vehicle.
What other tips can you give us to look out for when purchasing 2nd hand. Might save some of us a few problems and $$$

Trade in price is around 17k on the hilux
as for your info Mikell , we can tell a mile away , if its been hit or painted , The most important things to check
Door sealer ,the joind between door skin and door , if its been played with , you will see it a mile away , if you are usure of what its suppose to llok like , check all the doors for diffences. Some times the seam sealer will be diffrent between rear and front doors, Check all the bolts to see if they have had spaners on them , if the paint is missing on the sholder of bolts , its because they have been removed , check close to the paint for filler , you can usually see the viabter marks when its sanded back . These are simple checks you can do your self . Always check under the oil cap , to see if its clean , if you see oil sludge build up , its because its missed its service intervle . If you see creamy oil , its usualy a blown or cracked head . I hope this helps

Just reading the local rag. There's a mob called Aus Dent who claim to be able to repair hail damage without replacing panels or repainting. They have repaired hail damaged vehicles during the past 5 yrs in Horsham, Warrnambool,
Hamilton and are currently quoting in Melb. Some kind of paintless dent repair.I may be mad but I'm not crazy
