Question: Cape York

Hello everyone, Im planning a trip to the tip of cape york. I am planning on doing it from mid May to mid June. I only have a 1998 Mitsubishi Challenger and im wondering if it will be capable of the trip? Also wondering if i would be better off going in August rather than May?

Hi Matt, we did the Cape in May 2008 and had the benefit of plenty of water still about to splash thru in the creek crossings. Left Cooktown on 6th May and did Battlecamp route to Laura then rejoined the PDR. Lakefield NP was closed on the way up but open by the 21st on the way back. Locals agree that the best time is straight after the Wet which in most years will be over by early April giving it a month for water levels to drop before you arrive.
As for the Challenger - you'll need its high clearance in a few spots and 4WD only on the Telegraph Track. The Bypass is far easier. Keep tyres at 26psi and don't go over 80 kmh on the corrugations..................W

We did the telegraph track in June 2011. It was quite dug up in sections from cars before us, I think the earlier you go, the better.
A trip to the cape isnt complete unless you do the old telegraph track.
Just walk every crossing, and keep your tyre pressure LOW (18 & 20 PSI).

We got talking to a group of people at Bramwell Junction and asked if we could just tag along behind them along the track just in case there are any problems (We were traveling alone). We ended up becoming great friends with them and spent the whole 2 weeks with them and we still chat and hang out now.

We saw a lot of people do dumb things and trying to show off hence the reason they had problems. We have a Nissan Patrol and didn't get stuck once. It was a lot of fun, the river crossings were just beautiful and it has been the best part of our Aussie travelling so far.

You can get to the tip in a 2wd along the PDR but there is no challenge there - just uncomfortable bumpy driving.

Do the OTT and have a ball. Talk to everyone and just have fun :)

PS. dont worry about crocs in river crossings - there are none! Just watch out once you get to the very tip, I hear they can be found on the beaches.

Plan to give yourself 2 days at bramwell junction.
Just chat to the people who look like they know what thy are doing.
Everyone is in holiday mode and keen to hit the OTT so you'll find someone to tag Along with.
Such a great experience! Trip of a life time- you'll lOve it :)
Safe traveling!

May should be OK and the road should be officially open unless we have a huge wet (it closed today for through traffic between Laura and Coen. Road closure). Some of the dips will still have water in them but nothing dramatic. You don't have to do the telegraph track. It's a nice time to travel. If you delay till August some work will have been done on some sections but on the other hand there will be more traffic.

Mid May is at the early end of the season so there is a possibility rivers could still be up. That said the crowds generally haven't arrived by then so campsites wont be as crowded nor the roads as dusty. If suitably prepared the Challenger will be more than capable to cover almost any of the tracks on the Cape. Really there is not that much technically difficult driving particually on the key tourist routes. To put it in perspectivee we succesfully took a group of Suburus up to the top years ago when conditions were far more challenging.
Cheers Craig..................

G`day Matthew,

I did the cape last June ,July, August and it was relatively easy travelling the development road although it was corrugated in some sections.
Depending upon the end of the wet season May might be a tad early and the roads might not be graded yet.
I advise you to check when the Qld. school holidays are and try to dodge them if possible.
It seems some people try and cram too much into a limited time and just drive like crazy.
We had several near misses with vehicles travelling fast and virtually "skipping sideways" around badly corrugated bends in the road.
Prepare your vehicle as thorough as possible to prevent breakdown before you leave and you should be ok.
Shockers take a real hammering, I would have new ones fitted before going.
It`s not a bad idea to stop often and feel if they are overheating, let them cool before moving on if they are.
At that time of the year there will be lots of other vehicles on the road and help is readily available.
There is heaps of good info in the Blogs section.

Enjoy,

Scrubby.

Hi Matthew C, I did it in September 2010 in a 1992 Triton with no problems and I didn't do much to the car before leaving except new tyres. Did the tele track as well. May and miss all the rat bags, June and the track will have 100's a day on it.

We did a rip in 2008. My blog at http://oz4x4ing.blogspot.com/ has the details.

I also have some videos on youtube that show the road conditions we encountered.

Hi,

If you have the luxury to do so, try and plan your trip outside the school holidays. There will still be plenty of cars so you won't be alone (always good to make a buddy at some tricky crossings so you can help one other out)

but is better than the rush of cars in the holidays

Enjoy
