Good Morning All

The last section of the water covered Birdsville Track has had water pumped from the Track and inspections will be carried out today to see if the Track will be suitable for all vehicles to be driven safely over the last section.

I will be speaking with my contact today for the lasted details and will post them when I have given to me.

So until my next and possibly last Birdsville Track Ferry report.

Cheers to all that have been following my reports over the last 2 years.

Steve and all, I crossed on the ferry on Tuesday and came back on the track yesterday. As you say the word with the local crew was that they will be finishing up on Friday. They are letting trucks and some 4wds through now. Thanks for the heads up a week or so back. It was a special thrill for us to cross the Cooper by ferry and rd on the same trip. The mozzies were the worst I have ever seen.

Hi Boobook

When I rang this morning at 9.30am, my contact is on leave and will not be back until next Monday. What I can also now officially report from the next person in charge was that there was a team up there at the Birdsville Track site as I was on the phone and officially at 10am, today the 12th January 2012, the ferry will be taken out of service and the Birdsville Track will be open to all traffic.

He did say however that the ferry is still floating on the water and will only be put back on its blocks once they are 100% sure that the flow coming down the Cooper again will not reach and cross the Birdsville Track.

So hopefully early next week I will be able to post the next lot of Official figures from Transport SA.

Cheers

Dont worry about your contacts, just check out the outback roads report and it shows the BVT is now open.

We took a flight over the lake and up the cooper from the inlet up to The Ferry, Wrights Air. There were over 10,000 pelicans ( the pilot's estimate). They have all concentrated along that section of the cooper. Last time I went over the lake when it was full we didn't see any.

What a sight! Very memorable.

Thanks for your help Steve.

Hi BS

If I did not worry about my contacts, I would not have been able to give out the details over the last 2 years here on the forum. The details that I have given out you will not find anywhere else but here on the forum, or if you can they would have been taken from what I had written.

And for the record, when I posted the above, the Birdsville Track Ferry was still running and again here on the forum, readers will have read before anywhere else that the ferry was taken out of service at 10am today, well after your 3.30pm reply.

Hi Boobook

Yes the bird life from the air must be seen to be believed, and what a sight it was. Your flight would have been fantastic and I am pleased to be of help to you and others here on the forum.

Cheers

Hi Skip

Thanks for that. It is like I mentioned before here on the forum, once I started to give out the information, it had to be accurate and I intended to follow it through until the ferry stopped running.

Cheers

Just by way of contrast to all those that see glee in the Cooper's flood.....on ABC radio this am - Phil at the Mungerannie pub was on air and said he hopes the Cooper never floods again ! Understandable I guess, but who wants to pick a fight with nature ?

Hi Darian

That is strange, as I would have thought that yes, 2010 was a very wet year with the greatest ever closures of the Birdsville Track because of the wet weather and it would have effected tourists travelling the Birdsville Track.

However last year during 2011 the Birdsville Track did not suffer from the constant rain of the previous year and was open all the time. The only tourists that would not have been able to head that way would have been travellers in large caravans.

I would have thought that they would have been a minority compared to the camper trailer, tent travellers that travelled the Track last season.

When we were at Mungeranie last year, there seemed the usual number of vehicles there like a normal year, but then Phil would know from the figures.

Cheers

Gday Stephen,
Maybe Phil at Mungarannie is sick and tired of the mice and rats he's had to deal with?

Hi Sharon

Do you know how it compares to the other flows when it came down and crossed the Birdsville Track, and do you think that it could do so again at this very early stage?

Cheers

Hi Steve, i dont think it would change anything down further towards Btrack. Inna is pretty dry now. John said current flow is from Grant. It would take another decent Tc to have any real impact like ave seen in the last two years. Unfortunately Qld folk need to put up with Cyclones to fill the Cooper completly.

I am sorry that I missed the ferry but time did not let us get that way. But we will be going up there this year. At least we had a flight over lake Eyre.

A bit off topic question. Any sign of the Warburton Creek crossing opening for access to the Rig Road and the Simpson?

Hi Phil

I have not heard any reports about the Warburton at this stage and I know that a lot of people are waiting for the crossing to be open again.

Cheers

Thanks Stephen

I had been following your track reports and was waiting for a chance to ask you. I cannot PM you. Not a member.

No more follow ups please folks. This is off topic and I am trying to be a good boy this year.
