Howdy All,
Been a memeber for a while but this is my first post.
I have a question.
The family and I are planning a trip to
Wave Rock in
Hyden WA. We are towing a small camper but its is pulled by a 2.5ltrTD NB Pajero. Great old bus, but she doesn't like the hills very much.
I'm looking for suggestions on the fast way across the ranges and the flatest path to
Hyden from the Southern suburbs.
Any suggestions?
Cheers in advance
Stewie

Hi Stewie
Apart from leaving the coastal plain, the country is undulating rather than hilly. The best way would be via the
Brookton Highway (Route 40) through
Brookton,
Corrigin and Kondinin.

Thanks Motherhen!
That was my thoughts too - once you get through the ranges it should be all good.
Just wanted to make sure!
Cheers

Hi Stewie - Pretty flat once you get out into the wheatbelt. I really can't remember the
hill on the
Brookton Highway, so I'm sure it is not a memorable as the Greenmount
Hill which would overheat the car when towing a heavy load, or the
Albany Highway which can be pretty slow with a heavily laden truck.

On the way across take the time to go Via Kulin along the "Tin Horse Highway" this is
well worth a look.
Here is a link to some info.

Depending where abouts in the Southern suburbs you are, the flattest route is up Welshpool Road to the very end turn right and then turn right again when you get to the Pickering Brook shops. This will then take you through Karagullen. Brings you out at the little old servo on
Brookton Hwy. Most of the steep drag up
Brookton Highway is to about this point.
The road is pretty undulating all the way to
Brookton tho even through the agricultural portion. Lots of trucks this afternoon as I drove back from Brookton/
Pingelly.

Hi Stewie,
I live in Roleystone just off the
Brookton Highway and agree that this is the way to go if starting in Kwinana. It really isn't much of a
hill at all and if your rig can't make it then I wouldn't be taking it to
Hyden anyway!
I hope that you are going on past
Wave Rock to
Esperance or somewhere to make the trip worth while -
wave rock isn't really all that exciting and the last couple of times I have been in that area the flies were unbelieveable!
Take your bathers - there is a
pool at the
campsite.
Have fun
Nick

Hello Nick,
We won't be going any further this time. Our rig and 4by are still new to us so we are just stretching their legs slowly for now.
I'm from up that way, so I know what you mean about it's nothingness. I've been promising the wife and kids to take them up there for years, so the time has now come.
Once we have confidence in the set up then we venture further. My altimate goal is
Fitzroy Crossing. I've never been up there but I've seen some pretty amazing
pic from mates who have.
Cheers
Stewie
