A couple of questions regarding spotties and lights generally as I prepare for the Xmas trip around WA.
I have a Nissan Patrol that came fitted with the IPF lights that were being fitted for "free" by the Dealers at the time. I have a set of Hella 4000's off the last 4WD that are in a box in the shed. I have not had a chance to drive in a suitably dark place to really evaluate the IPF's but am I right in expecting that the 4000 is going to be the better of the two lights that I have to use.
Secondly, I'm an awful long way from an ARB or similar
shop and I have been researching lights through the archives [second in subjects number and only beaten by "tyre choice" I reckon] and I keep reading about fitting aftermarket lighting looms.
If I was to get a loom what is the brand of choice and what should I expect to pay for it and is fitting it something that any numbskull [that would be me] can do or do I have to get someone else to do it for me. In other words is it a simple case of unplug what is there and replace it with the right part of the loom or is it a bit more than that?

Ooops. It was late, I was tired and slow, apparently my fingers are wide awake and fast.
Please post the replys to the other "same" question.
I have spanked myself severely.

Not really necessary but pre-made looms are handy I suppose.
Get some heavy wire (6mm i.e. 6 sq.mm.) hook it to a suitable power supply on your vehicle, main under bonnet fuse for example or starter motor. Run it through a 20-30 amp circuit breaker and then on to a relay switch.
Break into your high beam wire behind a headlight, one of those clamp-on clips that cut through the insulation but not the wire will do the trick. Run this to the other pair on the relay (this can be lighter wire, say 10 amp, but should also be fused). A relay is merely a heavy duty switch activated by an electromagnet. The other side of this pair to earth and the other side of the heavy wire to the lights. You can get double relays for 2 lights but I prefer to duplicate with 2 relays.
Make sure your lights have a good earth.
Now when you put your lights on high beam the current will activate the relay and close the circuit for your spotties ..... voila!!
To be 100% legal the circuit from the high beam (the activating circuit) should also have a switch so you can run on high beam without the spotties. This means mounting a switch on/near the dash which can be a pain as we all know. I haven't bothered with this in the past.
P.S. When you look at the relay it will have a little wiring diagram with the points numbered telling you what goes where.

Atlantic. Looks great but shows bush scratches to be polished out.
White's the most sensible for scratches, dirt and heat but a tad boring.Fidei defensor

Moneypit ... Repco now sell a wiring kit for
driving lights in their "Ziel" range for $49. I have no idea if it's any good, but I will be taking a look at it tomorrow. I'll let you know what I think once I see it.

Moneypit,
The IPF & Hella's are much of a muchness i think , but if you want to swap them the existing loom is fine just unhook the IPF & hook up the Hella'sRegards Bob

There aree several types of IPF lights with varying strength and quality and many look the same. Most other light brands have different types.
Are the recatngular or round and does the lens have a flat or concave lens or is the backing black or
grey. This will help work out whether you have the standard IPF's or HIR type lights. We have so little time to enjoy our land

the hella 4000 great light , but do not overtighten the light adjusting bolts (big plastic heads) they will earth out your individual light when u dont want them to (shorten bolts ,2mm ) prob solved now u can tighten them so no hands can undo seen this several times , also they do not seal 2

The IPF's that Nissan give away are great lights, 4mm should be enough for 100w lights and go with the relay, you can pick up the feed from the plug at the back of the lights, I went to the wreckers and cut off some headlight plugs and wired the hi and lo beam into relays tooLaterally Literal

Thanks to everyone who gave their 2 bobs worth. Ended up with the Hellas on the front and used the existing cabling.
