You need drinking water hose to fill the tank - garden hose will make it taste like plastic. So go to Bunnings and get the light blue, braided hose made by Nylex or Neta.

If you still have a problem, the second likely cause is the hose they used on your van. Third likely cause is the tank.

This is the light blue one. Like a marine hose. Old one was a garden hose. I buy bottle water and am hanging for a decent coffee.lol

What brand is your blue hose? If it is light blue, with smooth finish (not braided) and white on the inside it is the dreaded Pope brand drinking water hose that always tastes like plastic! The braided stiff hose is best.

That is the one. SO!!! We get rid of it then. Problem solved it is the stupid hose. We have just sorted that one tap to the sink feeds the water from the hose and the other pump tap(water as good as Perth water gets,ha) is tank filled with old hose and is okay.
We are new to van life and only had it a week. We had an old bus and that had one pump on the floor tap.

Thanks all for your help and patience.

Yeah, I can't believe that Pope are still selling that aweful hose and have the hide to write "drinking water" on the package. I first bought that hose 7 years ago and got caught out, and have come across a few others since. No amount of Bicarb or other stuff fixes it because its just the water sitting in the hose that get's affected.

When at home I always fill the tanks from the garden hose and don't seem to have a taste problem. They're good Nylex hoses though so that may make a difference.
In parks or at servos we use our flat drinking water hose which was made by Hozelok I think.
Good hose which because it's flat can be would onto a electric lead holder and takes up little room.

AlanTH, In 3 yrs on the road we used a Nylex garden hose and a filter and drank the best tasting water. Never had a problem. Maybe we're on to something.

New tanks can give the water a taste for while as well, mine is still giving the water a slight taste after about 5 months. I just leave it full when not in use then drain and refill before a trip.

It was okay on the old hose but it was twisting so we thought we'd get a new one. Wish now we hadn't.

1/ make sure your hose is 'food grade' or 'drinking water hose'

2/ half fill your tanks, drive around the block a couple of times to slush it around, then drain it , refill, and re-taste,

3/ Who the bl--dy hell told you the Vodka would not help ??? [ lol ]

I 'cured' a tank with a bad taste by putting in some Milton, that is usually used to sterilise babys' bottles and it cleaned it up on one application.

I may stand corrected but I am under the impression that product is simply....

Bi Carb of soda which is all we have ever used on the rare occasions that a tank needed a fresh up up

I really think it is the hose as we didn't get this until we put the new hose on and that was after we had used the old one for a few days.
Drain it and get rid of this rotten hose. Another waste of money though.

chek,

My guess is the hose as well.
This is the only thing you have changed.

I bought "food quality" dringing water hose from Clark Rubber.
It is a white reinforced hose with a blue stipe.

Bought food/drinking water hose from Clark Rubber (light blue with white reinforcing/mesh) and use brass fittings both sides of tap end. No problems after initially flushing c/t tank with bicarb.

Make sure you run water through hose before each use though.

Thanks for the help. We have the white hose with the blue stripe and the copper fittings but we are at the moment in a really crowded park so can't flush the tank just now. Will try your remedies and put up with it in the meantime. Odd thing is when we fill the water bottles and put in the Angel the taste isn't too bad. Straight from the tap is horrible and even the electric jug stinks of it.
Trials and tribulations.

At least we have water unlike those in other countries:-)

The normal garden hose is OK after it's been used ...in the garden for a few months, I use one without any problems.
The blue hose as mentioned above allows light into the hose and when your parked permanent after a while the green slimy Algea starts to grow inside the hose...YUK.
And for campers in cold country the blue hose is a mongrel to roll up, it's like a spring coil.

You forgot to add that it must flushed through immediately prior to use, or it will impart a plastic taste.

I must silly for not realising that you meant to keep the hose running for a few months.

I meant, if you leave a hose lying in the sun with still water in it, it WILL impart a taste.

I use my garden hose as I said above but do allow it to get flushed out first. That green algae grew in the clear hoses used on the dual tanks under our camper trailer so I painted them with some matt black paint and had no problem after that.
Good luck with the problem, nothing worse than a foul cuppa first thing in the morning.

Chek,
you ought to be able to return that hose as being unfit for the purpose. Calling it a Drinking water hose is hardly truthful, although it may not leach poisonous stuff, if it affect the taste, it does not qualify as "Drinking water".

Probably one of the best places to buy drinking water hose is from the marine shops............they don't seem to be overpriced like the caravan retailers, and if the yachties get lumbered with tainted water they whine good and loud to all their mates and that shop wont sell much hose after that.

Eiter that or go to a specialist hose supplier...I'd never buy anything critical from bunnings or the like.

Bad water is a more serious problem for yachties......they tend to carry a lot of water, and cant just drain & refill if they get some crook stuff.

There are also water & tank treatment products in these shops too.

cheers

I had a bad tasting tank in my old Jayco Eagle. Treated it with a bottle of home brew bottle wash powder. Mixed it up into a solution and tipped the lot in through a funnel. Filled tank and let sit for a few hours. Drained, refilled, no bad taste.
The stuff is made to wash the new coopers plastic home brew bottles and seems to work well.Get it from BigW

Fresh drinking water hose should be branded with the appropriate AS/NZ standard.
Must conforn to the following standards:
AS/NZS 2554:1998 Class B
or AS/NZS 2070:1999.
Most of the quality ones will conform to both standards.
