Talking to a couple of friends yesterday and they were saying there is a
free camping area on the river near Binalong NSW. Has any body heard of such place

There is a
rest area near the river between Binalong & the Hume Highway on the relatively new
Illalong Deviation.. That may be used as an overnighter..no facilities as far as I'm aware.....oldbaz.

Don't stop on my way through but I've seen people pulled over near the usually dry creek just west of the town, rhs of road travelling west - not far from Gilbert's grave (which is on the lhs a little further on). Looked dodgy to me. There is no 'river'. The
rest area Oldbaz has mentioned is a few km east of Binalong on rhs as you travel west. It's quite long, not far from the hwy and had no facilities when I last went through a few weeks ago.
