In January I plan to drive from Benambra to Suggan Buggan on Limestone Rd. I am interested to see the Murray as close to its source as possible. Does anyone know the best place to do this? I have a well set-up 80 series, but will be a solo vehicle with my family and don't want to get too adventurous on this trip.
The best map I have at this stage is Hema East Gippsland. It shows Limestone Creek Track as a possible option. Could anyone give me an assessment of condition and difficulty please? Any better ideas?
Thanks for your help.

The source of the river is just above Cowombat Flat now closed to vehicles, the closest you can drive is the juncton of Cobberas Trail and Mcfarlane Flat track then its a 3k walk to the Border Cairn near the spring thats the Murray's source.

This is shown on the Hema High Country map. The drive in is not to rough with some steep pinches.

Thanks Well 55. I now have Hema High country, and it is better. Thanks. Is the walk in clear to follow? How long do you reckon to walk it?
I know that how rough, how steep is too hard to answer, but If the trail is dry, would I need to be winching at all, or is it a straight thru drive? Any river crossings?
As an option, do you know the Limestone Creek Track?
thanks for your help.

You can do the round trip, go in via Cobberas Trail and out via Mcfarlane Flat track, with a couple of creek crossings depth depends on recent rain but usually ok, the track will bring you out north of Suggan Buggan

The walk to Cowombat along the old track is proberly the best way to go than direct to the cairn, it will tack a lot longer and when you get to the flat keep to the right and you will come to the Murray wher you can step over it into NSW, to get to the source follow it up stream for about 1/2 an hour and you will come to a flat area with the spring in it. Make a day of it.

Limestone Creek track has a few steep bits and small creek crossings, you will need to TR down to the Poplars to get to the Murray, this is at a T with Mccarthys

Hello Well 55,
That sounds like a nice trip, either that or your a damn good story teller. Either way, I will copy and paste what you said for a future trip, just something to use as an excuse to get out of the house for a few days.

One thing though, you said that the closest you can drive is the juncton of Cobberas Trail once you get there, the road is closed and its a 3 kms walk, do you know if that last 3 kms is accessable by trail bike? I'm a lazy bugger

Cheers mate and Merry Xmas to you and your family Angelo.I love it when you talk DIRTY !

Thank you for your advice Bruce,
But Ill ride my way. Yes the air is great, I still breath it while riding. I suggest you do what you like doing and I will ride my way when the 4b cant take me any further. If you think you seen some wonderful country, just imagine how much more you may have missed due to walking. I myself have seen some truly amazing things that are usually missed by walkers due to time restrictions. Oh and by the way mate, I am NOT a dirt tosser, I ride my machine very carefully trying to be just a careful as i am when driving offroad as far as damaging places goes.

Have yourself anad your family a great xmas. Angelo I love it when you talk DIRTY !
