Driving
home from a little shopping expedition, and I decided to come
home the long way and have a look at a new ore extraction mill that's in the process of being built on the Line of Lode.
As I approached the Holton Drive Railway Crossing the lights came on, and I slowed down and stopped, and thought, 'Here we go again there will be a long freighter coming up the grade into town as slow as a wet week, will I put the billy on', but as there wasn't much of an option I switched off and sat.
Well the train wasn't coming the way I expected, it was rolling down the grade, headed east, and as it came into sight I could see it was picking up speed and blowing its horn to warn us that it was approaching.
A Tojo GLX came up behind me, slowed down, and then accelerated, went round me, over double lines and into the path of the train. The leading locomotive missed the rear nearside by about a foot. This vehicle was driven by some stupid woman and there were a couple of kids seated in the back.
I lost sight of it as the train passed me with
the horn literally screaming and the brakes on with what I would suggest was an emergency application. Didn't make much difference though because about 30 container wagons went past before it stopped.
I wonder if that woman realises how close she was to getting herself & her kids fatally or severely injured, and of course it's just the thing you like to happen directly in front of you.
I've made an appointment to see the copper here who runs the 'tyre biters', and ask him if he'll task someone to sit off the crossing. It doesn't take a degree in rocketry to find out when the trains pass through. I won't hold my breath though.
But gees it gave me a fright, I wonder if the train crew had a change of underwear?
Trains -V- motor vehicles - any bets on who wins?

I had never seen the type of crossing gates before I came to Aus. from the U.K. In the U.K. or it was so, level crossings were guarded with solid gates that could not be driven round and if you were foolish enough to drive through them you would have wrecked your car on the gates.

Hi Ray. There was a rail crossing in Gillingham Kent which had similiar boom type gates but from memory a light fence unfolded down as the boom dropped. Never stopped a local cab driver called Gypsy Jim, he got caught 3 times by the
gate and dared to complain it was the railways fault!
There ain't no stopping idiots wherever they live.

No boom gates at this site, just flashing lights and bells.
Pretty
well like most crossings on busy roads.

This is where one of those cameras in the window would have been handy. Publish it on utube or whatever as a demonstration on how not to cross a railway crossing.

Indian rail crossings are nightmares.
I almost saw someone die today too. Travelling into town on the bus I watched a truck reversing into a drive and his rear top corner rubbed against power lines going into a warehouse. Must have shorted or been insulated because he kept maneuvering.

Over here in Asia they have a different way to stop deaths on the railway
In Indonesia the are hanging concrete balls the size of grapefruit over the lines to stop people riding on the train roof, which they say is unsafe.
Mmmm concrete ball, speeding train, human skull, yep that should work!

most train drivers i have spoken to, have being in that situation before. the more times it happens the quicker they respond and they deal with it better.
my dad work QLD railways and one of his friends accidently reversed a trains onto his best mate, lets just say it was an experience i don't want to see happen. this guy was a mess, so much so he put his fist thru a glass window.
they also get lots of counseling

A driver mate of
mine hit a vehicle at a level crossing in NSW that had flashing lights.
Luckily it was a swipe and the car was sent spinning away.
The train came to a shuddering stop and my friend was sitting there wondering what the nresult was when the car driver banged on the side of the cab very Irate shouting did you not see me coming.
His (train Driver) answer was sure I hit you didn't I.
This was in his statement I took after he took a breath
test and passed.
I have always remembered it and thought it a great comeback after a real scare.
