Hi, I'm a newbie to this forum and also to 4WD vehicles in general, please forgive any obviously dopey questions I may put forward for a week or two :-)

I'm looking at purchasing a 4WD as a means of accessing where we are about to build, near Bendigo Vic. We'll probably drag the odd bit of tree around on the block (50 acres) as well as cart around the usual building materials, concrete, sand and so on. There won't be any serious 4WD usage - not for now anyway. But I don't think a 2WD is really up to some of the work we will be doing with it. Guess its a little easier to make a 4WD into a 2WD, but not quite as easy to do the reverse. I would estimate we will only be doing around 40,000kms per year.

Have been looking at a '97 Holden Rodeo 2.8TD and an '00 Hilux 2.7 petrol. They both have full service hist, Rodeo 130,000kms the Hilux 110,000kms. Both in low $20k Both have ARB Bull bars, rear step hitches and canopies. Rodeo has 113 litre fuel tank. Hilux std. fuel tank 65 litre I think?

I realise they are very different vehicles and have very different characteristics, but they are about as much as I can afford and both offer everything I need. However I'm not sure which one is better if such a decision is possible, as there are pros and cons (to me) for either of them.

Does anyone have -
-Comparative info on fuel consumption for either vehicle for
-light load highway driving conditions
-as above but around town (Melb.)
-Any good or bad experiences with either type of vehicle?
-Any advice on why not to buy one or other etc?

Sorry for the lengthy email.

Stephen

Hilux- 108kw@ 4800rpm 235Nm@4000rpm, Tows up to 1500kg.

Rodeo- 74kw@3800 225Nm@2300rpm, Tows up to 1800kg.

Can only speak for the Rodeo as I briefly had one for work. Best point by far was the fuel consumption, always below 10l/100km and at times as low as 8l/100km. It drove well on the open road and did well off road (good low down torque) Around town it was a slug off the line but ok once moving and the ride was harsh when not loaded up.

Hilux is rated to tow 1800kg also (braked), with the correct towbar, just as the Rodeo is!

Yeah you're right.. my mistake!

Just been told that power for the Hilux 2.7 went to 112kw on more recent models.

2 totally different cars....

Lux is more capable offroader, lots of parts around for them, and have a huge following..

Rodeo is also good, but not in the same league. That be said my rodeo had 330,000 on it when I sold it, and was written off once.

Petrols are always expensive to run, but have more power, diesels will usually have more torque...

96 petrol rodeo here, love it.

Engine is different I ralise, but the vehicle is great, although not as much clearane as the lux off road is the drawback. And not as many 'after market' kits/parts.

But mine is a dual cab and the rodeo has heaps more leg room for the rear passengers which my teenager really appreciates.

Has an LSD rear end, lockers are available for both ends if u need them.

i have a 2000 lux extra cab - 2.7

i get about 13-14l/100k's around town (i sit in stop start traffic for 2 hours a day)
on the highway as low as 11-12l/100k's.
it's no rocket ship but it does ok if you're prepared to sink the boot into it.
mine's done 80 thousand and hasnt missed a beat so far.
for interests sake the xtra cab i believe has a bigger fuel tank @ 76 litres, it also has a 30cm longer wheelbase.
be aware there was a recall on that model to replace the wire rope spare tyre holder with a chain one (apparently a few fell off) - probably be a fairly good indicator of how well it was looked after if it had this mod performed or not.
anyway, enough useless trivia.

cheers,

KG
